There is no specific reference that could be found that clearly identifies the origin of the Rossiter family that settled at Caplin Bay in the early 1800s. It is assumed, without written proof, that they were Irish Rossiters probably from Co. Wexford where the surname Rossiter is quite common. Although there was a John Rossiter listed in the voters lists at Freshwater, Cape Broyle from 1840 to 1859, it appears that all of the Southern Shore Rossiter families originate from the Caplin Bay Rossiters. The name of the settlement of Caplin Bay was changed to Calvert in January 1922.

Birth:
No surviving records exist to allow us to prove that Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Rossiter and Anne ?? However, this conclusion has a high probability of being correct since family lore relates Thomas arrived at Caplin Bay, after his discharge from the Royal Navy.

Died:
I believe the record below to be that of Margaret (Rossiter) Keefe as she was the only Mrs. Edward Keefe in the area. While her place of death was given as Ferryland, again the obit likely refers to her district, instead of her actual home settlement.

According to the Vital Statistics death records, Michael Rossiter was born in Caplin Bay about 1809 but he died at Fermeuse. He appears to have lived at Caplin Bay for at least the first 50 years. He is noted in the voters lists at Caplin Bay from 1846 to 1859 but obviously moved to Fermeuse sometime after the latter date.

Although he was not listed at Caplin Bay nor Fermeuse in Lovell's 1871 Directory, he is listed in McAlpines Directory 1870-71 CAPLIN BAY Rossiter Michael fisherman

It is difficult to determine, with any degree of certainity, which Rossiter couple may have been Ellen's parents. I deduced that it may be Thomas and Anne based on traditional naming practises for children used by the English and Irish.

It appears that Luke Rossiter, who had immigrated to the US, had headstones erected for his parents and some of his siblings. This is a broken headstone, with missing sections. I suspect that Luke's mother, Bridget (d.1899) may be inscribed on a missing part (Kevin Reddigan).

The late Ray Curran wrote that his great-great grandfather had a severe speech impediment, and was often referred to locally as "Stutterin' Jack" Rossiter.

Voter:
Although there was a John Rossiter is listed at Athlone (on the north side of Caplin Bay) in the Voters Lists of 1840 to 1842, earlier references suggest this individual was not "Jack" Rossiter. In 1842, this John Rossiter sold his land at Athlone, and it appears he may have left Caplin Bay. I believe the first Voter's List entry for "Jack" Rossiter was actually in 1847. His residence for that year was recorded as Road Side, but in later lists it was also recorded as Harbour or Riverhead.

Died:
According to family information, Jack was living at Ferryland with his daughter, Margaret, (Mrs. Martin Curran) when he died.

The birth date used here was taken from an 1867 naturalization record for Michael "Keef". Since there are no records for this era surviving from his Newfoundland parish, this information cannot be validated. While Michael's birth year tends to vary in some US documents, for the most part, it stays within a few years of the date given in his naturalization document.

Naturalization:
The Michael "Keef" in this record was identified as being from Newfoundland, where he born on 21 Sept 1838. He stated he was living at Gloucester, Massachusetts at the time of his naturalization.

According to the 1900 US Census, Michael entered the US in 1857 and had been living there for 43 years. He indicated in that census that he was a naturalized US citizen. He also gave the same immigration year (1857) in the 1910 US Census. However in the 1920 US Census, when Michael was asked for his immigration year, he indicated 1867. I am speculating that he may have given his naturalization year (1867), instead of his immigration year.

I can't be 100% sure that Michael Keefe of Caplin Bay is same Michael "Keef" who was naturalized in 1867. The 1867 naturalization record that I found states that Michael Keefe was born Sept 21, 1838 in Newfoundland. This was the only record which closely matched the age and origin criteria of the search.

He is noted as being born in (English) Canada; his father being born in Ireland and his mother being born in (English) Canada. Michael indicated that he had come to the US in 1857. His second wife, Mary, had entered the US in 1874. She indicated that she had been born in (English) Canada as were her parents. It doesn't appear that Michael had any children from this marriage, however Mary indicated that she had had three children, one of whom had died.

Her headstone indicates that she was born in 1845, the year derived if you subtract 59 years from her death year, ignoring the months and days. Other sources suggest she could have been born as early as 1841. In the 1900 US Census, her birth was recorded as Oct 1845.

Although a number of references indicate she was born at St. John's or Ferryland, her family was documented as being at Caplin Bay (renamed Calvert in 1922) when Anastasia was born. Her father, Edward Keefe, was listed in the surviving 1840 to 1859 Caplin Bay Voters Lists.

Immigration:
In the 1900 US Census, Anastasia stated that she had immigrated in 1859. However, based on her December 1862 marriage in Halifax, Nova Scotia, it is unlikely she had already immigrated to the US. We don't know how long Anna and James stayed in Nova Scotia after their marriage.

Upon her death in April 1904, a local newspaper THE ITEM stated that "The late Mrs. Kelly was fifty-nine years of age and for forty-two years she had been a resident of this district." If accurate, this statement suggests that Anastasia and her husband, James, had settled in the US in late 1862 or early 1863.

This census shows that by 1900 Anastasia was a widow living at 495 Western Avenue in Boston with her four adult children. She indicated that she had been the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom were still living. Anastasia also indicated that she had been born in (English) Canada. She indicated that her father had been born in Ireland and her mother had been born in (English) Canada. All children indicated they had been born in Massachusetts, however the census stated (incorrectly) that their father had been born in Ireland, not Massachusetts. Anastasia indicated that she had arrived in the US in 1859.

Birth:
This John Johnston is a bit of a mystery but as far as I can tell he was the son of William Johnston and Ellen Rossiter.

Property:
On Sept. 7, 1886, the magistrate at Ferryland wrote a letter to the Colonial Secretary informing him of a "sad calamity" at Caplin Bay. He stated that several poor families had lost all of their property there in a fire which started about 10:00 AM the previous day. He identified those left destitute as being "James Power, wife and nine children; Matthew Whelan, wife (an invalid) and three children; John Johnston, wife and two children; and Anne Clancy, an aged friendless widow" .....

Census:
In the 1910 US Census, John and his son William were both lodgers in the household of Norah Delay on Summer St. Both John and William were working as labourers. John indicated that he was widowed at that time.

Died:
Using the Connecticut City Directories in ancestry.com, I was able to track the presence of John J. Johnston (aka Johnson) living at various addresses in Bristol up to 1911 (inclusive). He disappeared from the Directories after that year. In the Connecticut Death Record Index, 1897-1966, I found a listing for a John Johnston who died in Bristol on the 9 April 1912. To date I have been unable to find an on-line record to verify that this record is for John J. Johnston from Newfoundland.

Steamer Harvard, a Boston beam trawler, limped up Boston harbor last night to the Fish Pier, her flag at half-mast for the loss of one of the crew, and bringing a tale of suffering, as a result of a battering from the terrific gale that at times reached cyclonic proportions and threatened to engulf the vessel while on Georges on Wednesday night.

A Gloucester man, John Yuerrea, was nearly hurled to his death when a wave swept him over the side but another swept him back and he clung until the water receded. Other members of the crew were badly bruised and cut during the struggle which lasted for several hours while the gale was at its height.

Michael Johnson of 270 Lovell street, East Boston, was carried overboard and lost when one of the giant combers swept over the craft. John Yuerrea of Gloucester, was swept from the deck and thrown back again by another wave. He was so badly crushed about the body and head by his weird experience, he was removed by ambulance to the U. S. Marine hospital in Chelsea for treatment.

William Fowler of East Boston and Ronald Whiffen of Gloucester were injured about the head and body, but were treated for the injuries aboard the ship.

The trawler was in the vortex of the heavy storm that swept the Atlantic coast on Wednesday. The Harvard, commanded by Capt. John T. Hayes of Dorchester, with a crew of 22 men, was trawling near the Georges Banks, about 125 miles off Cape Cod, when the gale struck them, with very little warning. The crew had barely pulled in the lines when the sea was whipped into a fury. Soon the waves were running 30 to 40 feet high. For six hours they were at the hurricane's mercy. Tremendous volumes of water broke over the ship, carrying everything movable on the deck into the sea. A heavy rainfall, so thick that the bow of the ship was invisible from the pilot house, cut the faces of the men if they looked to windward. It was the worst storm Capt. Hayes had ever encountered in his long sea experience. It seemed to come from all directions.

The fire room became waist deep in water, while the firemen feverishly worked to keep up steam. But their efforts were in vain. The steam gauge lowered and with the loss of power, the ship could not be kept head on into the raging sea. The trawler was thrown into the trough of the waves and tremendous seas broke over her. The galley door was forced open and it was filled with water. The boat was tossed about like a cork and the crew was thrown about like tenpins.

One of the waves carried Johnson to a watery grave. A short while later, Yuerrea was lifted overboard and was rescued by a freak trick of the elements, when he was thrown back again on the crest of another wave. Fowler and Whiffen were swept along the deck, and wedged under a steel grating at the stern of the boat.

After six hours of terror, the storm subsided as quickly as it arose. Members of the crew stated they couldn't have lasted another hour. The firemen had become exhausted and could not have kept up even the amount of steam they had succeeded in doing much longer.

MICHAEL JOHSTON - The terrific storm that raged along the coast last week played havoc with the fishing fleet operating out of New England ports, and a young Newfoundland life fell a victim to the elements. The steam trawler, Harvard, arrived at East Boston on Thursday with her flag at half mast and brought the sad news of the loss of Michael JOHNSTON, one of the crew. The Harvard left on Monday, Aug. 22nd, for the fishing grounds at George's Banks and encountered one of the worst gales ever experienced off the coast. The seas poured into the fire room and it was impossible to keep the trawler head to the wind. JOHNSTON was aft in the act of opening oil barrels when a tremendous wave washed him overboard and he was seen no more. The unfortunate victim of the disaster was the son of Peter JOHNSTON of Calvert, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, and had been fishing out of East Boston for five years. He was 27 years of age and had been married but six months to Miss Beatrice SWAIN, also of Calvert. Besides his wife, there survive him in Massachusetts four sisters, Mrs. Catherine SWEENEY, East Boston; Miss Nellie JOHNSTON, Winthrop; Miss Winnie JOHNSTON, Dorchester, and Mrs. Stella MEAD, Cohasset; whilst at home there are left to mourn at Calvert his father, brother William, and Mrs. Mary O'BRIEN, sister. Nearly all the crew of 14 of the Harvard were Newfoundlanders, and the skipper, Captain John T. HAYES, formerly of Harbour Grace, reports that last weeks storm was one of the worst he has ever experienced. Michael Johnston is commemorated on the same headstone as his parents in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery at Ferryland. It is inscribed that he was lost at sea 24 August 1928, however the tragedy actually happened in 1927. His body was never recovered.

The manifest of the ship Nova Scotia shows Gertrude Rossiter, 26, single, a nurse in training, of Cape Broyle, arriving at the port of Boston from St. John's, Newfoundland on 1 November 1926. It indicates that she was returning to Newton, MA after a temporary visit to Newfoundland. The manifest show that her immediate relative in the US was her brother, R. Swain, 214 Felaway, Medford, MA. She is described as being 5'3",with fair complexion with red hair and blue eyes. She had resided in Newton since 1916.

The 113 foot Boston beam trawler Belle had been fishing on the Western bank of Nova Scotia and was on her way into port with sixty thousand pounds of fresh fish aboard including haddock and cod with a worth of six thousand dollars. The captain, Peter Linekin, stated by radio telephone that he was about 100 miles east of Boston and that the craft was having trouble and assistance was required. Then the radio silenced. The Belle, along with her crew of seventeen men, were never heard from again.

Immigration:
There are a number of manifests entries for Philomena, the earliest being October 1915 when she was 19 years old. The manifest shows that she had sailed to Sydney, Nova Scotia on the SS Kyle and she later entered the US (by train?) at Vanceboro, ME. She stated it was her intention to meet her uncle "Louis" Rossiter in Bristol, Connecticut. (Her uncle's name was actually Luke Rossiter). It appears that he had paid her own passage. Luke worked in a clock factory and at that time was boarding at 94 Valley Street, which was the home of John J. and Margaret Fahey.

It is not known how long she stayed after 1915, but the next manifest shows that in September 1920 Philomena, this time accompanied by her sister Marcella, again entered the US headed for Bristol, Connecticut. (The manifest is not clear, but it implies that Marcella may not have been permitted to enter the US). They indicated that they had a contract to work there as waitresses for Harry Brown, prop. of the Endee House. There are indications from some manifest notes that Philomena may have left the US again in 1924.

Again in May 1925, manifests show that Philomena entered the US through Vanceboro, Maine. It appears her destination this time was Charlestown, Massachusetts where her cousin Mrs. Edward O'Neil lived. In 1927, she again sailed to the US from St. John's, via Halifax, on the SS Nova Scotia, after a temporary stay in Newfoundland. Again her destination was given as the home of her cousin Mrs. E. O'Neil, 71 Moulton St, Charlestown, Massachusetts. She indicated that she planned to stay in the US indefinitely, however it appears she did not actually became a US citizen until May 1954.

I believe the reference to Philomena's cousin should actually be "Mr." Edward O'Neill whose maternal grandmother was Margaret Rossiter. His wife's name was actually Mary Margaret (Murphy) from Ferryland and I cannot find any earlier kinship to her.

Died:
The U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) gives her birth date as 29 June 1896. According to the SSDI, Philomena and Arthur's last place of residence was in (North) Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire.

Bridget was described as 5' 4", fair complexion, with brown hair and blue eyes. It is rather curious that she used her maiden name and indicated she was single, not widowed.

There is an interesting story about Jack and Mary O’Neil Rossiter’s son Tom and their son-in-law Tom Young. Tom Young was shot and killed at the USA border while rum running during Prohibition in the 1930s and Tom Rossiter was charged with defrauding the US Government of $24 Million in unpaid taxes. He smuggled liquor in from St. Pierre and from Barbadoes. He was acquited and finally settled in Halifax where he bought stores for his children. Apparently he made one return trip to Calvert and treated all of his old friends to a night on the town and a night at the Hotel Newfoundland.
