Notes:
Research Overview:
The references to Jane Johnston are very confusing. It appears that her first husband, William, died before 1825. In that year Jane Johnston signed an indenture for her son James, about nine years old, to be apprenticed to the blacksmith Robert Pitt, at Ferryland. About the same time, it appears Jane entered a relationship with James Fitzpatrick and had two children by him. Although no marriage record has been found married their children, baptised in the Church of England, were recorded under the surname of Fitzpatrick. In the first baptism in 1826, the parents were recorded as James and Jane Fitzpatrick but for the second child in 1828, only Jane Fitzpatrick's name is recorded. This could just be an oversight, or it could indicate that James Fitzpatrick had died.
In 1833, a female recorded as Jane "Johnston" of Caplin Bay, had a daughter, Mary, baptised in St. Luke's CE Parish at Ferryland (no father named - no other details given). There is no evidence that William and Jane had a daughter named Jane so it is possible that Jane "Johnston" Fitzpatrick could also be the mother of this child. She would have been about 48 years old when this child was born. It is hard to draw any conclusions since references to this individual's surname vary depending who was recording the reference.
In 1837, Ferryland Court records show Jane Fitzpatrick requested that her son James be released from his (1825) apprenticeship agreement with Robert Pitt, because Pitt had not properly fulfilled his contract with her son. (PANL, GN 5/4/C/1, Ferryland, box 1, 93, Jane Fitzpatrick v. Robert Pitt, 9 January 1837).
In 1842, Robert Carter, while referring to Elizabeth Jane Fitzpatrick in his diary, he names her mother as Jane Johnston, not Jane Fitzpatrick.
In the St. John's newspaper article that reported her death at Ferryland in May 1885 (age 100), she is referred to as Mrs. William Johnson.
Died:
Births, Deaths, Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers (1810-1890): Mrs. William Johnson died at Ferryland on May 5, 1885, age 100 yrs, there 75 yrs.
This brief obituary fits Jane, wife of William Johnston of Caplin Bay, since there was only one Johnston family living in Ferryland parish. Obviously at the age of 100 she would have been living with someone else at Ferryland, possibly some of her son James' family. It is interesting to note that she came to the Ferryland area about 1810.

About a week after the death of Robert Pitt, an entry in the Ferryland Diary of Robert Carter states: "Jan 28 1843 - James Johnson of Caplin Bay has this winter opened up the forge of Mr. Holdsworth for carrying on business on his own account"
James Johnston is listed in the voters lists at Caplin Bay (Beach) in 1840 and 1842, and at Ferryland (North Side) from 1844 to 1859. James was granted land on the north west side of the main road at Ferryland in 1847. (Registry Crown Lands - index #658). In the Church of England baptism records, James occupation is given as blacksmith.
Church of England Ferryland District Burials October 20, 1880 - Johnson, James Ferryland 63 Henry Winsor
No headstone has been found for James. I think it is likely that he was buried in the Anglican cemetery at (Forge Hill) Ferryland, which was close to his forge. It is not known if a headstone ever existed. This cemetery has a number of old headstones, one dates back to 1818. If one did exist, it is possible that it is now buried in the hillside, overgrown with grass and brush (Kevin Reddigan).

| 3. | William Johnston (1.Jane1) was born Aft 1816, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 11 Apr 1907, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried abt. 13 Apr 1907, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Voter: 1847 - 1859, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
- Residence: 1871, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
William was supposedly 92 yrs old when he died but based on the fact that James (b. 1816) appears to have been the eldest son, William was likely, at least, a few years younger. His death certificate says he was born at Ferryland not Caplin Bay, however the baptism record of his brother James in 1818 states the parents, William and Jane Johnston, were from Caplin Bay. Although it appears William remained Anglican, I seem to remember seeing a record (which I now cannot locate) of a deathbed conversion to Catholicism. All of his children were raised as Roman Catholics.
Voter:
William Johnston's name first appears in the Voters List at Caplin Bay (Road Side) in 1847 and in each subsequent Voters List, up to and including 1859.
Residence:
William was listed as a fisherman at Caplin Bay in Lovell's 1871 Directory.
William — Ellen Rossiter. Ellen (daughter of Thomas Rossiter and Anne) was born Abt 1816, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 15 May 1903, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 17 May 1903, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. [Group Sheet]

| 4. | Nicholas F. Johnston (1.Jane1) was born Abt 1821, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 9 Dec 1912, Ferryland, Newfoundland; was buried 12 Dec 1912, Forge Hill Anglican Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Voter: 1855, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Little is known of Nicholas, but it appears that he never married. He was not listed as the head of a household in Lovell's 1871 Directory. This could indicate that he was living in another household, possibly with his brother James, or he may have lived away from the area at that time. However, his name appears at Ferryland in later directories (MacAlpines 1894-97, 1898 & 1904) and the Ferryland Voter's Lists of 1900 and 1908.
Birth:
Nicholas' death record in the Newfoundland Vital Statistics states that he was 91 years old when he died at Ferryland. It also indicates he was born at Caplin Bay.
Voter:
His name appears only once in the early voter's lists at Ferryland - 1855. In that same year, a Nicholas Johnson was also recorded as a witness at the marriage of Mary Johnson and Marmaduke Clow. His name also appears as a witness at the marriage of George Mead in 1848.

Strangely, her mother is referred to as Jane Johnston, not as Jane Fitzpatrick. There was no mention found of Elizabeth after this 1842 reference to her.

- Baptism: 23 Jan 1848, St. Luke's CE Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Although it is likely that all of James sons learned the blacksmithing trade, it appears that the eldest son, William, inherited the Ferryland blacksmith business from his father. In a small rural area, there would not have been sufficient business to support other forges, so William's brothers moved on to other areas and trades.
William was the only child of James and Eliza who stayed at Ferryland. He operated the forge at Ferryland, and later on, some of his sons worked with him in the family business. It was his fourth son, Charlie, who mainly carried on the family business, with the assistance of his brother, Nick. The Newfoundland 1921 Census shows that William, Kate, son Gordon and son Charlie, who had married, were living together in the family home at Ferryland.

When Alfred left Ferryland it looks like he travelled much farther than his siblings, most of whom settled in St. John's. It appears that he ended up in Portland, Maine where he worked as a blacksmith. By 1915, Alfred was established in the smithy business in partnership with Joseph J. Smith. He had at least two daugthers, who were still living at home.

It appears in the 1890 directory there were two Charles Johnstons living on Circular Road (no numbers). This could be an error, however, there may have been a Charles from another family living in the same area. Charles Johnston (of James) is listed as a drayman, living at Circular Rd. when he was married. This is likely the Charles that was listed as working at the brewery.

Died:
Daily News, St. John's - June 9, 1909: Three men from Cape Broyle on their way to Brigus South in a dory had been drowned. The men, John (sic) Johnstone and his son and a man named Best left Brigus Monday for Cape Broyle and have not been seen since. It is supposed the dory capsized while one was putting up sail. Yesterday about 40 schooners passed down the shore and saw no sign of the dory or the men. Johnstone, Senior, was a practical fisherman and some years ago at the Grand Banks was several hours on the bottom of a capsized dory before being rescued.
Evening Telegram, St. John's - June 9, 1909: Word was received last night to the effect that three men, while on their way from Brigus South to Cape Broyle in a dory had been drown, The men, John (sic) Johnstone and his son and another man named Best left Brigus on Monday morning for Cape Broyle and up to last night had not turned up. The distance is only a few miles along a "bold" shore and it is supposed the dory capsized while putting up sail. Yesterday and Monday about 40 schooners passed down the shore but saw no sign of the dory or men.
Daily News, St. John's - June 10, 1909: No news of men Johnstone (2) and Best, presumed drowned.
Daily News, St. John's - June 11, 1909: The schooner "Beatrice M" arrived yesterday from Placentia. He was at Ferryland and on way down in darkness, struck what the crew believed to be an overturned dory. No doubt the dory which the two Johnstones and Best were in.

Died:
Family information states that Jane returned to Newfoundland "to die" sometime after Richard died in 1916 at Bristol, CT. The directories for that city show Jane was still living there in 1918, however, her name was not found there in the 1920 US Census. Likewise, her name was not enumerated in the Newfoundland 1921 Census. Family lore by Jane's grand-niece, the late Pauline (O')Brien Norris suggests she died at Calvert about 1923. However, to date, I have not been able to verify Jane's date of death and the location where she died.
Mary married Richard "Dick" Reddigan Abt 1867, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. | 25. | John J. Johnston (3.William2, 1.Jane1) was born Oct 1857, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 9 Apr 1912, Bristol, Hartford, Connecticut, United States. Other Events:
- Property: 6 Sept 1886, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; Major Fire - South Side
- Census: 1910, Bristol, Hartford, Connecticut, United States
Notes:
Birth:
This John Johnston is a bit of a mystery but as far as I can tell he was the son of William Johnston and Ellen Rossiter.
Property:
On Sept. 7, 1886, the magistrate at Ferryland wrote a letter to the Colonial Secretary informing him of a "sad calamity" at Caplin Bay. He stated that several poor families had lost all of their property there in a fire which started about 10:00 AM the previous day. He identified those left destitute as being "James Power, wife and nine children; Matthew Whelan, wife (an invalid) and three children; John Johnston, wife and two children; and Anne Clancy, an aged friendless widow" .....
Census:
In the 1910 US Census, John and his son William were both lodgers in the household of Norah Delay on Summer St. Both John and William were working as labourers. John indicated that he was widowed at that time.
Died:
Using the Connecticut City Directories in ancestry.com, I was able to track the presence of John J. Johnston (aka Johnson) living at various addresses in Bristol up to 1911 (inclusive). He disappeared from the Directories after that year. In the Connecticut Death Record Index, 1897-1966, I found a listing for a John Johnston who died in Bristol on the 9 April 1912. To date I have been unable to find an on-line record to verify that this record is for John J. Johnston from Newfoundland.

Michael Johnson (sic) was not specifically identified as a Newfoundlander in the newspaper article, but this is undoubtedly the event where he lost his life.
Out of Gloucester website - wwww. downtosea.com: The Harvard - Friday, August 26, 1927 - One Swept From Deck - Local Man Has Close Call
Steamer Harvard, a Boston beam trawler, limped up Boston harbor last night to the Fish Pier, her flag at half-mast for the loss of one of the crew, and bringing a tale of suffering, as a result of a battering from the terrific gale that at times reached cyclonic proportions and threatened to engulf the vessel while on Georges on Wednesday night.
A Gloucester man, John Yuerrea, was nearly hurled to his death when a wave swept him over the side but another swept him back and he clung until the water receded. Other members of the crew were badly bruised and cut during the struggle which lasted for several hours while the gale was at its height.
Michael Johnson of 270 Lovell street, East Boston, was carried overboard and lost when one of the giant combers swept over the craft. John Yuerrea of Gloucester, was swept from the deck and thrown back again by another wave. He was so badly crushed about the body and head by his weird experience, he was removed by ambulance to the U. S. Marine hospital in Chelsea for treatment.
William Fowler of East Boston and Ronald Whiffen of Gloucester were injured about the head and body, but were treated for the injuries aboard the ship.
The trawler was in the vortex of the heavy storm that swept the Atlantic coast on Wednesday. The Harvard, commanded by Capt. John T. Hayes of Dorchester, with a crew of 22 men, was trawling near the Georges Banks, about 125 miles off Cape Cod, when the gale struck them, with very little warning. The crew had barely pulled in the lines when the sea was whipped into a fury. Soon the waves were running 30 to 40 feet high. For six hours they were at the hurricane's mercy. Tremendous volumes of water broke over the ship, carrying everything movable on the deck into the sea. A heavy rainfall, so thick that the bow of the ship was invisible from the pilot house, cut the faces of the men if they looked to windward. It was the worst storm Capt. Hayes had ever encountered in his long sea experience. It seemed to come from all directions.
The fire room became waist deep in water, while the firemen feverishly worked to keep up steam. But their efforts were in vain. The steam gauge lowered and with the loss of power, the ship could not be kept head on into the raging sea. The trawler was thrown into the trough of the waves and tremendous seas broke over her. The galley door was forced open and it was filled with water. The boat was tossed about like a cork and the crew was thrown about like tenpins.
One of the waves carried Johnson to a watery grave. A short while later, Yuerrea was lifted overboard and was rescued by a freak trick of the elements, when he was thrown back again on the crest of another wave. Fowler and Whiffen were swept along the deck, and wedged under a steel grating at the stern of the boat.
After six hours of terror, the storm subsided as quickly as it arose. Members of the crew stated they couldn't have lasted another hour. The firemen had become exhausted and could not have kept up even the amount of steam they had succeeded in doing much longer.

MICHAEL JOHSTON - The terrific storm that raged along the coast last week played havoc with the fishing fleet operating out of New England ports, and a young Newfoundland life fell a victim to the elements. The steam trawler, Harvard, arrived at East Boston on Thursday with her flag at half mast and brought the sad news of the loss of Michael JOHNSTON, one of the crew. The Harvard left on Monday, Aug. 22nd, for the fishing grounds at George's Banks and encountered one of the worst gales ever experienced off the coast. The seas poured into the fire room and it was impossible to keep the trawler head to the wind. JOHNSTON was aft in the act of opening oil barrels when a tremendous wave washed him overboard and he was seen no more. The unfortunate victim of the disaster was the son of Peter JOHNSTON of Calvert, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, and had been fishing out of East Boston for five years. He was 27 years of age and had been married but six months to Miss Beatrice SWAIN, also of Calvert. Besides his wife, there survive him in Massachusetts four sisters, Mrs. Catherine SWEENEY, East Boston; Miss Nellie JOHNSTON, Winthrop; Miss Winnie JOHNSTON, Dorchester, and Mrs. Stella MEAD, Cohasset; whilst at home there are left to mourn at Calvert his father, brother William, and Mrs. Mary O'BRIEN, sister. Nearly all the crew of 14 of the Harvard were Newfoundlanders, and the skipper, Captain John T. HAYES, formerly of Harbour Grace, reports that last weeks storm was one of the worst he has ever experienced. The "Weekly" expresses deep sympathy to the young widow and members of the deceased's family. - Newfoundland Weekly, Boston.
