Research Overview:
No written reference to Robert's birthplace has ever been found, however, there are several versions of family lore that relate to the circumstances of Robert's arrival at Caplin Bay. Although some details differ, most of this oral family history has a common thread. Some family tradition says that Robert Swain was a Protestant who came from either Co. Wexford or the province of Ulster, (Northern) Ireland. He purportedly converted to Catholicism when he married a girl named Betsy (or Mary) Bryan from Ferryland.

Robert Swain settled on the northeastern headland of Caplin Bay, in the area known as Stone Island. His home was located on the eastern side of Stone Island River, opposite the property settled earlier by the Wade family. The earliest record of the Swain name in this area was in the Ferryland Supreme Court records. On Nov. 3, 1830, Robert Swain was "charged, with others, in erecting a stage at Stone Island shooting place which interfered with other people's nets which have been set there for 40 years". The charges were laid by Matthew Morry and Co. and Benjamin Sweetland and Co., fishing merchants of English origin whose fishing operations were based a couple of miles west, at the head of Caplin Bay.

Robert is shown as a voter at Caplin Bay from 1840 to 1852. It is not known exactly when Robert died, however, his name does not appear on the voters' lists after 1852. It is likely that the absence of his name in the 1855 voters list indicates that Robert had died by the time the 1855 list was compiled.

On Jun 17, 1891, the Evening Telegram reported that at Caplin Bay "on the 15th inst., Elizabeth, relict of the late Joseph Sullivan, aged 74 years" had passed away. Her Vital Statistics death record also states that she was 74 when she died.

All indications are that Ellen was the daughter of Robert Swain of Caplin Bay, since this was the only family of that surname in the parish of Ferryland. Her approx. birth year is calculated based on her age (42) given in the 1871 Canada Census.

Robert's Vital Statistics death record states that he was 78 when he died, however there are two different death dates on record. One record shows that on Dec 23, 1908, a Robert Swain died from paralysis, but another entry shows that a Robert Swain died Jan 9, 1909 from old age. The Voters List of 1908 shows only one Robert Swain lived at Caplin Bay. There is family lore that the attending physician thought that Robert was dead and prematurely recorded his death on the first date. Shortly afterwards, it was realized by the family that Robert was actually still alive, and he remained so for the next two weeks!

In January 1870, Crown Land grant #3068 implies that there were two James Walshs at Caplin Bay. The grant was made to James Walsh Jr., but it mentions that the land he was granted was bounded, on the south western side, by property owned by James Walsh Sr. Strangely, it does not mention a road way between these two pieces of property. The survey sketch appears to show the land north of what is now the public road. This section of the public road is still referred to locally as Walshes Lane.

No other reference has been found to James Walsh Jr. All of the property, both side of the road, was eventually inherited by descendants of Robert Walsh and Mary (Walsh) Murphy, James' brother and sister respectively.

I found a record for a Robert Swain, who died about the 23rd Jan 1881 when he fell from bowsprit of the Orient, [which] last sailed from Baracoa, Cuba, for Charleston, SC. His name is supposedly recorded on the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial Cenotaph. Since no age or other details were given in the record, I couldn't verify if this was Robert Swain from Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. (per Kevin Reddigan).

Thomas' Vital Statistics death record states his age was 21. However, no entry can be found of his birth in the Ferryland Baptism records which start in Oct 1870, so this age appears to be incorrect. A Thomas Swain was a godfather at baptisms as early as 1883 and 1884. There is also a Thomas Swaine, fisherman, who is listed at Caplin Bay in McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory. This would suggest that he was head of a household, which is very unlikely if he was only in his teens.

Died:
Thomas Swain died from diphtheria while at the seal hunt on April 2,1897. He and his cousin, Mike Sullivan of Caplin Bay, were shipmates on the ship Aurora out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Mike Sullivan died a few days later, on April 6, 1897, from diphtheria. Both are commemorated in the Newfoundland ballad "The Spring of 97" http://gestsongs.com/16/spring97.htm .

Robert Luke's baptism record identifies him as the son of Kyran Condon and Anne Swaine. This was obviously an error by the priest, since there is no notation that he was illegitimate. However, some family researchers have put a more sinister spin on this error, suggesting that Robert Luke was Kyran's son, and that Thomas Condon married Anne Swaine and raised Robert Luke as his own so that the family would not be disgraced. However, Robert Luke's Nova Scotia death certificate states that his parents were Thomas Condon and Ann Swain. Robert Luke moved to Kingston, Nova Scotia after the great fire of 1892 razed the city of St. John's, where he was living.

There appears to be two entries in the Holy Apostles baptisms for this individual - Dec 30 1859 and July ?? 1860. The godfather is listed the same, but one says the godmother was Sarah Kehoe and the other entry says Catherine Kehoe.

Died:
It appears that John left Caplin Bay in the 1880s and went to work in the copper mines at Little Bay, on the western shores of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Little Bay, once called Indian Bight, is a community 16 kms north of Springdale, Newfoundland. When the copper reserves started to deplete in the early 1890s, many of the miners who had settled there, also worked at their previous livelihood - fishing. This appears to have been John's situation. However, John was killed in a mining accident in 1894. His occupation at the time of his death was listed as a smelter. His widow, Mary, is listed as still living in Indian Bight (Little Bay) in 1898.

No baptism record could be found at Ferryland or Renews for Elizabeth. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, her birth month and year was recorded as Jun 1877. However in the 1935 Newfoundland Census, her age was given as 66. That age indicates that she was born abt. 1869. Her Vital Statistics death record says she was 71 when she died in 1943 (b. abt. 1872). Given that no baptism record was found at Holy Trinity RC Parish, it appears 1869 may be her most credible year of birth.

Some researchers have shown that this John Joseph was baptized there on the 9 April 1860. However, that baptism record shows the child's name was just Joseph, so I have concluded that the record is probably not for this John Joseph, but likely a brother, Joseph. In 1889, John Joseph went to British Columbia. Information from his Victoria, BC marriage record (MRI) states that John was 41 years old when he married in May 1900. The fact that this John J. Swain was the son of Joseph Swain and Anne/Anna Power is confirmed in his marriage record.

Frank Meaney, John Joseph Swain and John Williams (from Ferryland?) were all living in the same household in Victoria, British Columbia when the 1891 Census was enumerated.

In the 1911 Canada Census, at Vancouver, British Columbia, John and his son,Clifford, were boarders with a family named Redpath.

Residence:
Shortly after the 1911 Canada Census, John returned to Newfoundland from British Columbia. He was accompanied by his eleven year old son, Clifford. In September of 1912, he married Harriett (Doran) Meaney (widow of Frank Meaney) and built a small house on the Northside of Calvert near Harriett's daughter, Mary Anne (Minnie), who had married Ambrose Walsh. An old Bill of Sale, dated March 31, 1931, shows that John's land had came into his possession from Richard (Rich) Sullivan. The land, house, and furniture were willed to Martin Reddigan (my father) on the 10 day of May 1932. (Kevin Reddigan).

In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, there is no record for John Joseph Swain and any of his immediate family.It is unclear if this was an omission since they were not recorded elsewhere in Newfoundland.

Voter:
John Swain (of Joseph) was not listed in the 1924 Voters List at Calvert. However, he was an eligible voter at Calvert in the 1928 Voters List, but his wife Harriet was not listed.

This is the Last Will and Testament of me John Joseph Swain of Calvert, (North Side) Newfoundland. I give and bequeath my house on North Side of Calvert, N.F.Ld. and my furniture to Martin Redigan Calvert, North Side, N.F.Ld. and ask him to have Masses said for the repose of my soul, by the Rev. P Sheehan P.P. of Ferryland. In Witness whereof, I the said John Joseph Swain have to this my last Will and Testament set my name this 10th day of May 1932.

John died on, or about, 7 September 1932 and was buried in the Reddigan family plot in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery. John's only request, as a condition of the will, was that Martin Reddigan should have regular Masses said for the repose of his soul. This child is recorded as "Joseph" Swain in the Holy Apostles Parish Baptism records. Some researchers have shown this individual as John Joseph Swain, whom I believe may have actually been a brother born in the previous year. Taking the baptism record as factual, it appears that this Joseph died young since another child, also named Joseph was born abt. September 1865 (Kevin Reddigan).

Notes:

No one seems quite sure which branch of the Swain family William was a part of. In 1890, he was referred to as "William Swain of Stone Island, Caplin Bay, District of Ferryland" when he was given a Crown Land grant (#6410 - Volume 41, Page 99) "on the North side of Local Road at Stone Island, Caplin Bay". His land was adjacent to land granted, just a few days earlier, to Joseph Swain. William's land was also bounded on the south boundary by land in the possession of Laurence Sullivan. The witnesses at his marriage were Alfred Canning and Mary Swain, who were also married a few months later. I think it is likely that William was the brother of Mary (of Joseph Swain and Anne Power). William was noted as being 28 when they married in August 1892. His death record says he was born in Caplin Bay and he was 31 yrs. old when he died in 1894. He was only married about a year and a half when he died, less than a year after the death of his only child, Albert. (Kevin Reddigan)

About 1983 there was an old white marble headstone still visible in Ferryland RC Cemetery for Michael Sullivan. It was in poor condition, but parts of it were still legible. This stone eventually crumbled and disappeared, however a new memorial cross, near his parent's headstones, was erected by family members in 2015. (Kevin Reddigan)

Died:
Mike died while at the seal hunt in April 1897. He and his cousin Tom Swain, of Caplin Bay, were shipmates on the Aurora out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Tom Swain died on April 2, 1897, and Mike Sullivan died a few days later, on April 6, 1897, both from diphtheria. Their deaths are commemorated in the Newfoundland folk song "The Spring of 97".

His name is inscribed on the BEAUMONT- HAMEL (NEWFOUNDLAND) MEMORIAL Somme, France. Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park, situated 9 kilometres directly north of the town of Albert, was established in memory of Newfoundlanders who fell in the First World War. Charlie's memorial reads as follows: In Memory of - CHARLES CANNING - Private - 3466 - Royal Newfoundland Regiment - who died on - Saturday 13 April 1918. Age 26. Charlie's death is also commemmorated on his parent's headstone in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Newfoundland. It says he was "Killed in Action, Aged 25 Years".

Charles' official military papers indicate that he was killed in battle. There is no indication that he died as a prisoner of war. This official information was based on a German list which says #3466 was found dead on the battlefield and buried at Bailleul, France. (Bailleul is a town in the north of France near the Belgium border - K.R.)

Immigration:
Before he entered the US, John had to complete a pre-examination in Canada to determine if he could emigrate. This pre-examination was carried at Saint John, New Brunswick on 20 Aug 1923, two days after he arrived in that port from Newfoundland on the SS. Kyle. He stated he hadn't been in the US before and his intended destination was the home of his cousin Emma (Power) Sullivan who lived at 49A Saratoga St., East Boston, Massachusetts. (John and Emma were second cousins through their grandparents Joseph Swain and Mary (Swain) Walsh respectively).

According to the manifests, John Canning was eventually allowed to enter the US in March 1924. It notes that his father's name was Alfred Canning from Calvert.

Residence:
According to the City Directories for Bristol, CT, John lived with the Jackman family in 1925 and 1926. In 1927, he is shown as living next door at # 8 Franklin Street. He lived there until his death, which according to the Bristol CT directories, occurred on June 11, 1943 at the age of 41.

Census:
In the 1930 US Census, John Canning, from Newfoundland, was living at #8 Franklin Street in Bristol, Connecticut. He had been married for two years and his wife's name was Gertrude C. She was born in Connecticut, but her parents were from Newfoundland. There are no children shown in the census and it appears that both of them were working. They were next door neighbours of Arthur Jackman (of Renews?) and his wife Ellen (Clancy of Calvert?) who lived at #10 Franklin Street.

Died:
In the 1945 Bristol City Directory, the widow Gertrude C. Canning is recorded as living at #10 Franklin St. It also gives the death date of her husband, John J., as 11 Jun 1943.
