Abt 1822 - 1892 (~ 70 years)
Generation: 1
| 1. | Patrick Brien was born Abt 1822, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 20 Aug 1892, Goulds, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 22 Aug 1892, Mount Carmel Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland. Other Events:
- Voter: 1845 - 1859, Aquaforte, Newfoundland
- Residence: 1870 - 1871, Aquaforte, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
Patrick's Vital Statistic death record states he was 70 years old when he died, however his headstone says he was 73 when he died, therefore his year of birth may have been as early as 1819. Although Patrick is known to have lived at Aquaforte for quite a few years, it is unlikely he was born there. I am inclined to believe that Patrick was born at Ferryland.
Based on a petition that was circulated at Aquaforte in 1827, there were no O'Brien families living there at that time. In the 1840 Voters Lists, there was a Terrence Bryan listed at Aquaforte. In 1841, only a John Bryan was listed, however, in 1842 and 1844, both of these men were eligible voters there. In 1845, the year after his marriage, Patrick Bryan also became a voter at Aquaforte and, afterwards, these three Bryan men were listed as eligible voters through to 1855. In 1859, John's name disappeared from the Voters List and by 1870, Patrick Brien was the only male recorded as the head of a household at Aquaforte. It is unclear what happened to John but research indicates that Terrance Brien moved (back) to Ferryland.
Name:
In many records, this surname was recorded under several variant spellings such as Brien, Brian, Bryan, Brine etc., and later on, these variants were often preceded with the traditional O' Irish prefix.
Buried:
Mount Carmel Cemetery - St. John's, Newfoundland
O'Brien Patrick Aug 18, 1892, 73, erected by son Patrick O'Brien & daughter Esther Devereau(x). (Patrick's Vital Statistic record says he died on August 20, 1892 at the age of 70.5 years.)
John Lewis March 1, 1893 28 Years - son; died Chicago USA.
It is likely that John Lewis was buried in the United States but his name was commemorated on the same stone as his father.
Died:
I found it a little strange that Patrick, a fisherman all his life, would end his days in The Goulds, the farming area west of St. John's city. After extensive research, I noted that an Ellen Brien had married a farmer, John Walsh, of Kilbride in 1875. Even though the marriage record stated that Ellen was from St. John's, the female witness at their marriage was named Esther Ann Brien, a name that matched a daughter of Patrick Brien. Patrick's later presence in this area suggests that he was probably being cared for, in the final days of his illness, by a close relative. I believe that relative may have been his daughter, Ellen (Brien) Walsh.
Even though Patrick had lived all his life at Aquaforte, he was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the east end of St. John's city. Often, the cost and issues with transporting bodies back to their hometown was a deterrent, so the deceased where sometimes buried in a local cemetery where they died. In addition, by the time Patrick died, all of his children, except for Patrick Jr., had left Aquaforte. Several were in the United States, while the remainder were living at St. John's.
Patrick's wife, Mary Anne, who predeceased him in 1874, was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Ferryland. She is commemorated there on a headstone with her brother James (Murphy).
Patrick married Mary Anne Murphy 28 Apr 1844, St. John's, Newfoundland. Mary was born Abt 1827, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 27 Nov 1874, Aquaforte, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 29 Nov 1874, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. [Group Sheet]

The Boston Globe - ROBERT F. O'BRIEN, CAPTAINED DORY FISHING SCHOONER; AT 92
Author: By William P. Coughlin, Globe Staff - Date: 12/14/1991 Page: 41 - Section: OBITUARY
Robert F. O'Brien, one of the last of Boston's and Gloucester's dory fishing schooner captains, died of cancer yesterday at his Watertown home. He was 92. In Capt. O'Brien's heyday, when Boston was the world's top fishing port, a vessel would return here with at least 100,000 pounds of cod, haddock and flounder, or more than 20 times a shipload today. The big dory schooners and 130-foot steam and diesel beam trawlers jostled for space at the noisy dock every day.
Capt. O'Brien's two-masted, 95-foot schooner Putnam nested 13 to 17 dories on deck, which were dropped over the side on the fishing grounds with two fishermen each. Trips averaged seven to nine days, and Capt. O'Brien recalled one trip in 1948 when his vessel landed 200,000 pounds -- a record in a time of records.
A native of Aquaforte, Newfoundland, Capt. O'Brien came to Boston in 1922. He is widely remembered for the accident in 1942 off Cape Cod when the Putnam was struck and cut in two by a steamship in a wartime convoy out of Boston. Capt. O'Brien and his crew of 23 narrowly escaped in their dories after the steamer sailed on. Only one man was injured. Capt. O'Brien and his men, adrift without radios or lifejackets, were picked up by a Coast Guard cutter that spotted his flashlight blinking in the darkness.
A fisherman for 50 years, Capt. O'Brien also fished in the famed Boston schooner Adventure with Capt. Leo Hynes, now of Nashua. Hynes was the Boston Fish Pier's all-time high line fishing captain of the 1930s -- the man who caught the most fish per trip.
Capt. O'Brien also skippered an ex-minesweeper converted as a fishing vessel in early 1950s, and he alternated as mate and crewman on the Boston beam trawlers Flying Cloud, Arlington and Challenge.
He leaves his wife, Margaret (Carey); a daughter, Mary B. Ryan of Watertown; a son, Robert J. of Belmont; six grandchildren and a great- grandson.
A funeral Mass will be said Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Watertown. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Robert — Margaret M. Carey. Margaret was born 3 Mar 1903, Witless Bay, Newfoundland; died 23 Jan 1998, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. [Group Sheet]
