    Notes:

    Name:
Surname may also be recorded as Meany, Meeney,or Maney, Mainy (the latter two being the way that it was often pronounced locally).

    Research Overview:
All indications are that the Meaney family are descended from Francis Meaney, possibly the son of Thomas Meaney recorded at Ferryland in a pre-1800 court record. In the '1800 Census of Ferryland', Francis (Sr.) and Elizabeth (maiden name undetermined) Meaney were residents of Ferryland, along with their three children Thomas, Francis (Jr.), and Mary. My deduction is, shortly after 1800, other sons, William and James, were born to Francis and Elizabeth. There is no evidence of any later children for this couple.

There was one other Meaney family who lived at Ferryland after 1813. In that year, Matthew Meaney, from Old Laughlin Parish, Co. Carlow, married Mary Bryan of Ferryland at St. John's. There is no indication that this couple had any children, and it doesn't appear that Matthew was related to Francis Meaney and his family. Likewise, there was another Meaney family who settled further south in Clear's Cove, Fermeuse, and started a business there. However, again it doesn't appear that they had any kinship with either of the two Meaney families at Ferryland.

After the 1800 Census, there were very few mentions of Francis Meaney Sr. and his family members. However, based on surviving court records, it appears that all male members of the family lived at Ferryland in the first four decades of the 19th century. The Surrogate Court Records of November 1, 1819, shows Francis Meaney (Sr. or Jr.?) as a juror in the Evoy vs. Callihan civil trial in Ferryland Supreme Court, on May 3, 1830, Arthur Holdsworth and Co. sued Francis Meany (again no Sr. or Jr. notation). In District Court at Ferryland, on February 23, 1835, Francis Maney (sic) (Jr.) is listed as a member of the petty jury in the Mahan vs. Connors case. The fact that the Jr. designation was used indicates that there were still two Francis Meaneys living at Ferryland in that year. None of the surviving records give any indication that Francis Meaney Jr. was married. However, it appears his brother, Thomas, was married. He died in 1835 while participating in the annual seal fishery. From the voter's lists, we learn that by 1840, James Meaney, the youngest son, was living at Caplin Bay.

Although the Meaney family are known to have lived at Ferryland during the four decades after 1800, they may have actually used fishing premises located on the north shoreline of Caplin Bay. We know that by 1837, James Meaney was fishing from these premises, established on the inner headland area known as Stone Island. James and his wife Mary (maiden name undetermined) had three children, Thomas, Francis, and Sarah, there in the 1840s. Their home was located along the roadway leading to the Athlone/Northside area of Caplin Bay. James is listed at Stone Island in the Caplin Bay voter's list from 1840 to 1859. A notation in the entry for the 1859 list indicates that James had died, either in that year or shortly afterward.

The use of the shoreline outcrop known as Meaney's Island dates back to at least 1752. A map, drawn up in that year by Edmond Scott Hylton, an engineer, and cartographer, shows the presence of a fishing room there, but no dwelling houses. Unfortunately, no records identify the owners of the fishing premises in that era.

At Ferryland, in 1840, a Francis Meaney was listed in the voter's list. In the ensuing years, there is no other mention of the surname until 1859, when a James Meaney was shown living there, on the headland area known as 'The Downs.' Research indicates that this James Meaney of Ferryland married at St. John's in 1856. He and his family initially resided at Ferryland but moved to St. John's about 1871. In 1871, at Ferryland, there was also a William Meaney. Research indicates that William (born about 1822) died at Ferryland in 1898.

Based on my analysis of the surviving records, it appears likely that James and this William Meaney of Ferryland were sons of Thomas Meaney, who died in 1835 (son of Francis (Sr.)). Although inconclusive, several other Meaney individuals appear to lead back to this Thomas Meaney. Research indicates that James (of Thomas) has descendants living today in other parts of Canada and the United States.

Francis married Elizabeth Abt 1790, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Elizabeth was born Abt 1770, Ireland?; died Aft 1800, Ferryland, Newfoundland; was buried Aft 1800, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Research Overview:
The absence of church records for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish is a roadblock to identifying family structures in the Ferryland area. In the case of Thomas, the eldest son of Francis and Elizabeth Meaney, we know that he was eight years old per the 'Ferryland Census of 1800'. There are a couple of mentions of Thomas Meaney prior to May 1835. In that month, as ships returned from the annual seal hunt, Robert Carter, the resident magistrate at Ferryland, noted in his journal that Thomas Meaney of Ferryland had died while at the ice fields. Even if church records had survived, they would not have recorded Thomas' death since the Roman Catholic clergy did not document deaths and burials.

In March 1837, although there is no direct mention of Thomas' name, "Frank, a child of the Widow Meaney" died of scarlet fever at Ferryland. I believe that this child was very likely a son of Thomas Meaney. Although it appears that Thomas' brother, Francis, was still living at Ferryland in 1840, there is no indication that he ever married. After 1840, and up until 1859, there is no mention of any male Meaneys at Ferryland. This absence is rather strange. On September 19, 1846, a Great Gale (hurricane) caused widespread damage, loss of life, followed by several years of hardships. During these impoverished years, individuals in the area were assisted by Government relief in the form of flour (or cornmeal) and molasses. At Ferryland, several females (probably widows) received assistance, but there was no mention of anyone under the Meaney surname.

The absence of the Meaney surname at Ferryland for almost two decades, especially from the voter's list, cannot be explained. Based on later information, the surviving sons of Thomas would have reached the voting age in the 1840s. However, since Thomas' widow was still a relatively young woman when he died, she may have remarried. Of course, if Thomas' sons were living within their step-father's household, the step-father would have been the eligible voter. This possibility could explain why no male Meaneys were eligible to vote. It is also possible that Thomas' widow may have had relatives who took her and her children into their household. Again the same voting restrictions would apply within that combined household. In those days, there were no Government 'social nets' to support widows and their offspring so such family situations were inevitable.

Finally, in the late 1840s, the Meaney surname, relative to Ferryland, started to resurface again in the records of the local parishes and those of St. John's city. About 1848, it appears that Mary Meaney married John Swain of Stone Island, Caplin Bay. Although no one is now aware of any family lore about a Swain/Meaney kinship, I think that Mary was likely a daughter of Thomas Meaney. In 1853, the St. John's church records show that Elizabeth Meaney of Ferryland married Patrick Aspell. It appears this couple initially lived at St. John's, however by 1870, Patrick and Elizabeth were living at Ferryland. Likewise, in 1856, James Meaney of Ferryland married Esther Murphy at St. John's. In September 1857, the baptism of their first child, Thomas, was recorded in Holy Apostles Parish, Fermeuse, just south of Ferryland. Thomas' godmother was Mary Kenedy (sic), quite possibly the same Mary Kennedy who later became the first wife of Thomas Meaney of Stone Island, Caplin Bay. In 1859, James Meaney's name first appeared as an eligible voter at Ferryland, living in the area known as The Downs.

During the next decade, James Meaney's and Patrick Aspell's families appear to have stayed in the Ferryland area. By 1870, William Meaney, born at Ferryland, had surfaced in the surviving church records showing he too had started a family there. William lived out the rest of his life at Ferryland and died there in 1898. By 1871, James Meaney had either grown restless or saw employment opportunities elsewhere, so he and his family moved to St. John's. Shortly afterwards, the Aspell family also left Ferryland and moved to St. John's. Later records indicate that some members of the families of James and William Meaney and Elizabeth (Meaney) Aspell (including Elizabeth herself) eventually immigrated to Montreal, Quebec. Their interactions with each other, and their associations with other Newfoundland families living there, are documented in various church records in Montreal.

    Special Note:
In the Journal of Robert Carter, on Friday 11 October 1833, he mentions Thomas Meaney. He noted that he had "Sent away Oct'r C[ourt] H[ouse] Returns by Thomas Meaney. The 'away' mentioned in all likelihood refers to the routine procedure of forwarding court-related information to St. John's.

    Special Note:
Robert Carter's Journal noted, "Thomas Meaney home from the Westward today reports to have 60 Qtls, he was the first boat away & first back with his trip, he reports caplin at the Westward on Monday last".

    Died:
Robert Carter recorded in his Journal on May 7, 1835, "Thos. Meaney brought in, he having died at Sea onboard the Water Lily". Carter did not mention the actual cause of Thomas' death but he indicated that the "Water Lily came in from the ice [with] up to 1500 [seal] pelts". However, we know from historical records that the perils and harsh living conditions of the annual Newfoundland seal hunt claimed many, many lives down through the years.

Thomas married Bridget? Meaney Abt 1820, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Bridget? was born Abt 1800; died Aft 1837; was buried Aft 1837. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Francis "Frank" Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (1.Francis1) was born Abt 1794, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Abt 1841; was buried Yes, date unknown.

    Other Events:

    • Court Action: 1835, Ferryland, Newfoundland
    • Voter: 1840, Ferryland, Newfoundland

    Notes:

    Birth:
Francis was 6 years old when the 'Ferryland Census of 1800' was enumerated.

    Court Action:
In District Court at Ferryland, on February 23, 1835, Francis Maney (sic) (Jr.) is listed as a member of the petty jury in the Mahan vs. Connors case. The Jr. designation, if valid, indicates that there were still two Francis Meaneys living at Ferryland in that year.

    Voter:
In the 1840 voter's list for Ferryland, Francis Meaney, living on the 'North Side' of the harbour, was recorded as being an eligible voter. No evidence was found to clarify if he was Francis Meaney (Sr.) or (Jr.). However, based on typical marriage ages of Irish males, I estimated that Francis Meaney (Sr.) was likely born about 1760, so I am inclined to believe that the 1840 voter was more likely to be Francis Meaney Jr. The surviving voter's lists for 1840-1859 clearly indicate that 1840 was the only year that a Meaney voted at Ferryland, except for 1859. In that year, James Meaney, living on The Downs, was listed as an eligible voter.

Generally if a person's name was removed from later voter's lists, it was due to one of several circumstances:
    1/ the person died;
    2/ the person moved out of the district;
3/ the person was no longer considered to be the male head of the household in which he resided. Regardless of the number of males in a household, who were over 21 years old, only the designated head of the household was eligible to vote.

There is no way to determine which one of these circumstance explain why Francis' name was not in any of the later voter's lists in Ferryland District.

Francis married ????. Unknown [Group Sheet]

  3. 4.  Mary Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (1.Francis1) was born Abt 1796, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown; was buried Yes, date unknown.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Mary was recorded as being 4 years old at the time of the 'Ferryland Census of 1800'.

    Died:
There is no other mention of Mary found in any later records or documents. Of course, this in not unusual since most females seldom appeared in court records and such. The absence of marriage and baptisms records make it almost impossible to trace females who may have grown to adulthood, married, had children, and lived a full life.

  4. 5.  William Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (1.Francis1) was born After 1800, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Aft. 1833; was buried Yes, date unknown.

    Other Events:

    • Court Action: 6 Sep 1833, Ferryland, Newfoundland

    Notes:

    Birth:
It appears that this William Meaney was from this family group. His older brother? Thomas Meaney, had a son named William, who was born at Ferryland and died there in the late 1800s.

    Court Action:
Robert Carter wrote his "Journals" that the "Ferryland Court issued warrants this day (Sept. 6 1833) for (Philip J.) Bryan, (William) Meaney & (Martin) Curran - for breach of the peace & assault & battery". It appears from later references that "Richard Delahunty and others" had been assaulted by this trio.

Carter later relates "Bryan not yet taken - Curran yet in jail - Wm. Meaney in a weak state - those three appear to have suffered most from the row of Thursday night. It appears to me to have been of a more serious nature than was at first expected". Later court records indicate that Curran and Meaney were acquitted while Bryan was convicted.

After this brush with the court system, there is no further mention of this William Meaney. Although his uncle, Francis, appears in the Voter Lists until 1842, there were no Meaney Voters listed at Ferryland until 1859 when his first cousin?, James, was eligible to vote.

  5. 6.  James Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (1.Francis1) was born Abt 1800, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Abt 1860, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 1860, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada.

    • Special Note: 27 Aug 1837, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
    • Voter: 1840 - 1859, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland

    Notes:

    Research Overview:
Although there is no surviving record of James Meaney's birth, the forenames of his sons, Thomas and Francis, suggest a strong connection to Francis and Elizabeth Meaney of Ferryland. In 1800, this resident couple had two sons, also named Thomas and Francis, hence my deduction that James Meaney, born shortly after 1800, was a son of Francis and Elizabeth Meaney.

In the 1837 Education Report for Ferryland District, in the Journal of the Newfoundland House of Assembly, there was a brief mention of "J. and Mary Meaney" of Ferryland. Although not listed as government-paid teachers, the report states that they received two copies of Primers from the school supplies allotted for that district. Apart from the mention of one other family (the Browns) who received Primers, all other school supplies were for the use of the government-paid teachers. This record is rather curious since it may tie in with some family lore that Thomas, son of James, was considered by some (including his daughter, Ellen) to be a schoolteacher.

After the 1840 voter's list, there is no other mention of any Meany voters at Ferryland again, until 1859. However, in all of the voter's lists for Caplin Bay (1840, 1841, 1842, 1844, 1845, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1852, 1855, 1859), James Meany is listed. The Road Reports of the Journals of the Newfoundland House of Assembly also mention that James Meany of Caplin Bay received several road-building contracts in the early 1840s. Later in that decade, as a consequence of the widespread destruction and the ensuing hardships caused by the Great Gale of September 19, 1846, James Meany of Caplin Bay received government-provided food items (mainly flour and molasses) distributed to needy families early in 1847. Later that year, James provided labour in a 'government-funded work for relief scheme'. Records show that James was part of a work crew, from Caplin Bay, involved in the replacement of a washed-out bridge over LaManche River along the main highway leading to and from St. John's.

    Special Note:
Robert Carter reported in his Journal that a major wind storm with tremendous seas, on Saturday night into Sunday morning (26 & 27 August 1837, had caused great damage in the Ferryland/Caplin Bay area. He indicated that "Meaney's stage at Stone Island down with all his oil, etc. that was in it".

    Died:
It is unknown in which year James died, but a notation after his name in the 1859 voter's list says "dead." It is unclear if this was an update to the General Election held on November 7, 1859, or in reference to the list compiled for the General Election scheduled for May 2, 1861.

James married Mary Bef 1837, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Mary was born Abt 1804, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 8 Sep 1880, Ferryland, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 10 Sep 1880, Ferryland, Newfoundland. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Birth:
Family lore relates that Mary Meaney was from Ferryland. However, little is known of Mary, so we are left to speculate as to who her father may have been. Although there is no known family lore of direct kinship, there is a strong possibility that Mary (Meaney) Swain may have been the daughter of Thomas and Bridget? Meaney of Ferryland. John and Mary Swain had a son named Thomas, who died at sea in 1897. His brother, Peter, named his son, Thomas, after him in 1902. These were the only instances that Swain males were given that forename until late in the 20th century. (Kevin Reddigan)

    Died:
Births, Deaths, Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers (1825-1890). Swain, Mary - wife of John Swain, died aged 52 years at Caplin Bay on the 11th. June 23/85M.

Although the above newspaper obit states that Mary was 52 years old when she died in 1885, she was very likely older than 52, since she was married in 1848.

Mary married John Swain 1 Dec 1848, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. John (son of Robert Swain and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryan) was born abt. 1825, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 3 Jan 1904, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 5 Jan 1904, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:

    Immigration:
In the 1911 Canada Census, Elizabeth indicated that she had immigrated in 1899 but no record can be found of her, or her family, in the 1901 Canada Census.

    Census:
Elizabeth Aspell was enumerated as living with her daughter, Elizabeth (Malony) and son-in-law Michael in the 1911 Canada Census. This record was somewhat confused, possibly due to language differences. First of all, Michael's surname and first name were reversed in the record and "Michael" was spelled incorrectly. Elizabeth Aspell was actually recorded as Minie Aspell. Her first name may have been recorded as Minie because of a mention of her maiden name - Meaney. Her birth month and year was recorded as Sept. 1846 and her age as 65. However, since she was married in 1853, the year and age are obviously invalid.

    Died:
In her death record, Elizabeth's age is again recorded incorrectly. In French, she was recorded as being "soixante-dix sept" (77). This would equate to her being born about 1843; invalid since she was married in 1853. An age of 87 would make more sense, so maybe the person giving the information, gave her age incorrectly.

Elizabeth married Patrick Aspell 24 Apr 1853, St. John's, Newfoundland. Patrick (son of John Aspell and Bridget Brinnick) was born Abt Sep 1826, Rider's Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown; was buried Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Occupation:
We know that Thomas Meaney was a fisherman/farmer/carpenter/labourer all his life, but a curious reference to him being a schoolmaster showed up twice during my research. In an interview that I had with the late Allan Meaney in the early 1980s, he mentioned that his grandfather, Tom Meaney, had been a "hedge teacher." I figured he was referring to the term "hedgerow teacher," which in Ireland, mainly in penal times, referred to someone who secretly taught Irish history, the Gaelic language, etc. Since the English had outlawed Irish teachings, these clandestine teachers had to teach 'school' hidden from public view, behind the hedges of the countryside. I didn't take too much notice of this statement at the time since I was not aware of any family lore of scholarly inclinations within the Meaney family.

In later research, I found a reference to "J. and Mary Meaney" procuring Primers at Ferryland in 1837. This reference raised my curiosity about what Allan Meaney had told me. Some years later, I found the Nova Scotia marriage record for my grandmother's sister, Ellen Meaney. In this record, Ellen declared that her father, Thomas, was a schoolteacher. Thomas was born at Stone Island about 1843 and had access to schooling. It is a documented fact that his neighbour, Edward Keough, was the government-paid schoolmaster there for several decades. Although the government school inspector who visited Stone Island in the fall of 1846 was not impressed with Edward, his impoverished schoolroom, and low attendance, government records show that Edward was still schoolmaster there in 1855. Further research did not uncover any additional information about the extent of Thomas' education and whether or not he was ever an "official" teacher.

    Census:
When the 1880 US Census was enumerated, it recorded Francis Meaney (35) and Robert Swain (24), fishermen from Newfoundland, living as boarders at the home of the Irish family of James and Maria Galavan on Tremont St. in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Both men's marital status was single, however we know that Frank was widowed, not single.

    Census:
In 1891, Frank Mainey (sic), along with John (Joseph) Swain (of Caplin Bay) and John Williams (of Ferryland)? were seeking employment in British Columbia. In this Canadian Census, these three Newfoundlanders were living together in the James Bay Ward of Victoria City. Frank Meaney and John Swain gave their occupation as carpenters; John Williams' declared no trade. They were all unemployed at the time of the census.

According to this census, Frank Meaney was the head of the household, and all three men said they were single. A few years later, Frank Meaney returned to Newfoundland, remarried in 1894, and initially settled in St. John's. He eventually returned to Caplin Bay and died there in 1911. About 1912, John Joseph Swain also returned home. John had married in British Columbia about 1900, but his wife died in 1907. It appears John decided to stay at Caplin Bay and married Frank Meaney's widow in 1912.

    McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory - Ferrylamd - Ferryland District: Meaney, Thomas - fisherman.

    Residence:
In the 1898 McAlpine's business directory, there was a listing at Ferryland for Thos. Meaney, fisherman but no listing for any Meaneys at Fermeuse. In the 1900 voter's lists, there were no Meaneys listed anywhere in the District. We know from the Vital Statistic records that William Meaney died at Ferryland in February 1898, so the reason for his absence from this business directory and the 1900 voter's list is validated. In his will, William left his estate solely to his daughter, Bridget. He makes no mention of any other family members.

However, the Vital Statistic records show that a Thomas Meaney, age 73, of Fermeuse, died and was buried at Fermeuse in December 1898. Based on his age and location, this individual would likely be a member of the unrelated Meaney family who settled in that area, so this entry appears to be valid. However, it is unclear if the 1898 entry for Thomas Meaney at Ferryland is valid. If it is correct, then this Thomas was likely the son of William, who may have left Ferryland shortly before or after his father's death.

  2. 16.  Bridget Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (7.William3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Francis1) was born May 1870, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 1 Jan 1937, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; was buried 5 Jan 1937, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

    Birth:
No baptism record was found for Bridget but various documents state she was born at Ferryland, Newfoundland, about 1875/1876. The Holy Trinity Parish baptism records survive back to 1870, so if Bridget was born at Ferryland she should have been recorded there or a nearby parish.

    Residence:
Bridget Meaney was identified as the sole heir in her father's will of 1898. It would appear that Bridget was living at Ferryland with her father when he died. There is no mention of any other family members in his will, but research indicates that at least one of Bridget's siblings had immigrated to Montreal, Quebec.

    Census:
In the 1911 Canada Census, in the St. Antoine District of Montreal, Quebec, there was a Bridget Meeney {sic},from Newfoundland, single, age 35, who indicated that she had immigrated in 1902. She was working as a domestic in a private home.

    Census:
In the 1921 Canada Census, Bridget Meeney (sic) was working as a domestic, in Westmount, Montreal, Quebec. I eventually found a burial record that verifies Bridget, daughter of William Meaney and Alice Powers (sic), who died in Montreal, Quebec in January 1937.

    Travel:
On July 28, 1923, a Passenger Declaration shows that Miss B. Meaney, age 48, born at Ferryland, Newfoundland travelled to Montreal on board the SS Manoa.

Bridget indicated that she had arrived in Newfoundland from Canada, on July 7, 1923, to visit her relations. She gave the name of her cousin, John Meaney as her nearest relative. She stated that she was employed as a domestic servant at 147 Bishop St., Montreal.

As far as I can determine, John Meaney was her firt cousin, the son of Bridget's uncle and aunt, James Meaney and Esther Murphy. John was actually born in St. John's and this Meaney family had lived at the west end of Water Street since the 1870s.

    Other Events:

    • Baptism: 6 Sep 1857, Holy Apostles Parish, (Fermeuse/Renews), Newfoundland
    • Immigration: 1881, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

    Notes:

    Birth:
Although the church records for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish at Ferryland prior to 1870 have not survived, an entry located in Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Parish baptism records at Fermeuse/ Renews shows that Thomas Meaney, the first born child of James Meaney and Esther Murphy was baptized there on the 6th September 1857.

However, in Canadian Census records, from 1891 onward, Thomas' year of birth was usually recorded as the 5th of September 1861. It is not clear if the year was an error on Thomas' part or if the 1857 son, Thomas, died young and another son born in 1861, exactly four years later, was named Thomas. This practice of commemorative naming was quite common, especially so in this family since both of his grandfathers were named Thomas.

    Immigration:
In the 1921 Canada Census, Thomas' year of immigration was recorded as 1881.

    Buried:
Service was from Notre Dame Basilica.

    Died:
To add to the confusion as to the correct birth year of Thomas Meaney, his age at death was recorded (in French) as "soixante -cinq", that is "sixty five". If this was meant to be "soixante-quinze" that is "seventy five", then his calculated birth year would be 1857.

Thomas married Margaret Mary Ryan Abt 1888. Margaret was born 7 May 1866; died 30 Oct 1930, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; was buried 3 Nov 1930, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Birth:
Ellen Mary's birth month and year were given in the 1921 Newfoundland Census as Apr. 1857. However, there is a surviving baptism record for her brother, Thomas, in September of 1857, so Ellen Mary was most likely born in Apr.1859.

I found a record for a Robert Swain, who died about the 23rd Jan 1881 when he fell from bowsprit of the Orient, [which] last sailed from Baracoa, Cuba, for Charleston, SC. His name is supposedly recorded on the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial Cenotaph. Since no age or other details were given in the record, I couldn't verify if this was Robert Swain from Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. (per Kevin Reddigan).

    Notes:

    Birth:
Thomas' Vital Statistics death record states his age was 21. However, no entry can be found of his birth in the Ferryland Baptism records which start in Oct 1870, so this age appears to be incorrect. A Thomas Swain was a godfather at baptisms as early as 1883 and 1884. There is also a Thomas Swaine, fisherman, who is listed at Caplin Bay in McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory. This would suggest that he was head of a household, which is very unlikely if he was only in his teens.

    Died:
Thomas Swain died from diphtheria while at the seal hunt on April 2,1897. He and his cousin, Mike Sullivan of Caplin Bay, were shipmates on the ship Aurora out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Mike Sullivan died a few days later, on April 6, 1897, from diphtheria. Both are commemorated in the Newfoundland ballad "The Spring of 97" http://gestsongs.com/16/spring97.htm .

Actually at one point, he and the military came to the conclusion that he must have been older, possibly 47 or 49. At any rate, Peter never saw any action, since his service records show he had rheumatism/arthritis most of the time so he was kept in England. He was finally discharged from the military on 18 Jan. 1818.

    Notes:

    Buried:
Vital Statistics record says Agnes was buried at Ferryland but headstone is located in Aquaforte.

    Died:
There was a Agnes Ryan who died at Aquaforte in 1914. Her headstone says she was 36 when she died. Unfortunately, her Vital Statistic record is incomplete and does not give her place of birth. Her 1904 marriage to Richard Ryan (of Aquaforte) recorded her age as 27. However, the priest did not record the hometowns of the bride and groom. The calculated birth year (based on the above events) indicate that this Agnes was born in 1877 or 1878. A check of the Holy Trinity Parish and the neighbouring Holy Apostles Parish records show the only Agnes Ryan baptised in the area, in the 1870s, was Agnes, the daughter of Patrick and Sarah Ryan. She was born at Ferryland in about Jun 1873. Further research required.

Agnes married Richard Ryan 24 Nov 1904, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Richard was born Abt Nov 1870, Aquaforte, Newfoundland; died 28 Mar 1961, Aquaforte, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 30 Mar 1961, Our Lady of Fatima RC Cemetery, Aquaforte, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. 1911 Census - Nova Scotia - Colchester (County) Truro Enum # 28 - Page 19 - Line 48 Household 165 - Maney, Nellie F Boarder S 22

Household 165 was the home of an old retired couple, Mr.(age 80) & Mrs. (age 73) Fletcher. There is no birth date information recorded for Nellie, but her age is given as 22. I got the impression that Nellie probably wasn't present when the census information was enumerated. The blurred original indicates she was employed as a spinner at (Stanfield's) Woolen Factory in Truro, NS. Her place of birth is given as N.S., not Newfoundland. Nellie is shown as being Roman Catholic (The Fletcher's were Presbyterians) and all are recorded as Canadian, of Irish origin.
