Research Overview:
Henry Garlick Clow "bachelor of the City of Bristol, England" and Sophia Holden "spinster of Harbour Grace" were the progenitors of the Clow(e) families of Harbour Grace and Ferryland. They were married at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Harbour Grace in 1809 and raised a large family. It is not clear if all of their children were born in Harbour Grace since there are a number of probable children for which entries were not found in the baptismal records of St. Paul's Anglican Church . The missing records could also indicate that they moved out of Harbour Grace for a period of time and then moved back there again - about 1828. Sophia died at Harbour Grace in June of 1832. Henry lived at Harbour Grace until the summer of 1939, when he moved to Ferryland to take up a new position there. He died at the home of his daughter, Adelaide, on the 13th of July 1855 at the age of 77. The residence of his son-in-law, given as Ferryland in this article, is probably incorrect since Adelaide (Mrs. J.T. Burton) appears to be have been living in St. John's at that time.

Although the Clow surname survived at Harbour Grace into the 20th century, most of the family was wiped out in the 1880s. Henry, grandson of Henry Garlick Clow, was the last to bear the Clow surname in the Harbour Grace area. He died sometime after 1904. His death record has not been found to date.

The Clow surname at Ferryland, which eventually became Clowe, appears to trace its survival to James Clow. He first appears in the voters List at Ferryland in 1859. James married Hanna Ryan of Ferryland about 1852. The children from this marriage were raised as Roman Catholic although James himself did not convert to Catholicism. According to the Ferryland Anglican burial records, James died at Ferryland about August 14 1868 at the age of 48.

Marmaduke Clow, son of Henry Garlick, whose birth was the last child for Henry and Sophia recorded at Harbour Grace, also raised a family at Ferryland. It does not appear that any of them setled in Ferryland area and Marmaduke eventually moved to St. John's. This family was raised Anglican and there is some evidence that his only surviving son, Henry Ernest Clow, may have become an Anglican clergyman. H.E. Clow is noted as performing Anglican baptisms at Greenspond, Bonavista Bay in 1890 and 1891, however his title is not given.

There was also a Matthew Clow who raised a family in the Ferryland area. The baptism of his twins, James and Mary, is recorded in the Renews/Fermeuse RC baptisms in 1859. Although his name does not appear again in any later documents, it appears that Matthew's daughter Mary married Martin Flynn of Conche at Ferryland in 1891. A James Clow, possibly her twin brother, was a witness at her marriage. A James Clow was also noted as the father of a child (Margaret) by Mary Curran in 1889, however no marriage record or additional children were found for this couple.

The only match found for the death of a Caroline Butler states she was 84 when she died in Aug 1892. The age may be in error or, this may not be Caroline Clow.

Deceased was a native of Bristol, England. He was Sexton at St. Paul's Church, Harbour Grace for 27 years.

There was no baptism record found for Robert. His death record says he was from Bristol but that information appears to be incorrect. He is noted as being 62 and was sexton of St. Paul's Church according to the newspapers.

It is not clear if this individual is not the same person as the Henry Clow listed in later directories and parish records at Harbour Grace. The fact that his name was Edmond Henry may caused some of the confusion with his nephew Henry. His listing as a printer could very well be possible since his brother-in-law, J.T. Burton, was in the newspaper business at St. John's in 1864. No other listing for that surname is found at St. John's until Marmaduke Clow moved there.

The 1855 marriage record at Ferryland states Marmaduke was from Port aux Basques. This record is somewhat confusing since he certainly appears to be the Marmaduke William Clow born at Harbour Grace in 1828. It is possible that he may have worked at Port aux Basques prior to moving to Ferryland. We don't know when Marmaduke moved to Ferryland, but based on some old court records of 1855, it appears that Marmaduke had been there long enough to become intimately aquantainted with some of local females. Just a few months before his marriage to Mary Johnston, Marmaduke was named in a paternity suit by another young lady. According to a presentation by Willeen Keough, given to the Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society in October 1999, the events unfolded as follows:

On July 13 1855, Mary Ann Perryman of Aquaforte appeared in court to name Marmaduke Clow of Ferryland as the father of her unborn child and to seek support. Marmaduke denied that he was the father. The following day Marmaduke was confronted at Ferryland by Mary Ann's friends from Aquaforte, Peter and Sarrah Payne, who began to abuse him by John Morry's wharf. Peter Payne, who was carrying a hatchet, trust it into the wharf in a threatening fashion. Marmaduke tried to escape, but Sarrah Payne caught hold of him and struck him several times. After that Peter and Sarrah took turns threatening him with the hatchet. Sarrah was said to have varied the routine by throwing rocks at him. The Rescue (of the Crew) of The Heather

This story was found on a now defunct Ferryland Municipal website - story source unknown. It tells of the successful, but near tragic rescue, of the crew of the brigantine, Heather by ten men from Ferryland. One of those involved in that rescue was Marmaduke Clow (Kevin Reddigan).

Late in March 1865, the brigantine Heather in charge of Captain Ash was returning to St. John's from a foreign voyage when she became jammed in ice off Cape Spear. Fearing the vessel would be crushed, four of the crew abandoned ship against their master's wishes.

It turned out their foreboding was right and about 1:30 on Mar. 26, Captain Ash and the three remaining crew members noticed that the ice was carrying the vessel onto the rocks. They too abandoned ship just minutes before she hit the cliffs. The vessel didn't sink however, but the ice had broken up and they were unable to get back to her.

On individual pans of ice, Capt. Ash and his three companions drifted south during the night and all the next day. By nightfall Tuesday they were without food and shelter of any kind and were concerned for the worsening weather. Mate Morris and the two seamen managed to get on one large ice pan but were separated from the captain by a large lake of water.

By Wednesday morning they were as far south as Ferryland and realised the chances of being spotted beyond this point would be very slim. As luck would have it however, a Mrs. Carter of Ferryland happened to glance out her window as she went about her work and spotted the men drifting by on the ice floe. She immediately spread the news and Father Murphy, the parish priest, called for volunteers to go into the ice filled seas to attempt a rescue.

Ten brave fishermen of Ferryland manned a boat and steered it through the ice to the rescue. They were Francis Geary, John Costello, William Morry, Marmaduke Clowe, Henry Morry, Richard Sullivan, Thomas Moore, James Sweeney, Peter Kelly and John O'Keefe.

They picked up the mate and seamen from the nearest pan first, and returned to shore with them. Again they put out to sea and headed in the direction of Captain Ash, however a storm was beginning to whip up and no sooner had they taken the captain on board when the storm broke. A strong gale drove their boat off to the sea, much to the horror of their families and friends looking on from the shore.

The gale raged all night and by daylight Thursday, the boat was fully forty miles out to sea. By Thursday afternoon the wind abated and they somehow managed to make land at Witless Bay, after suffering greatly from exposure.

Captain Ash was in particularly bad condition, after three days and nights in the open. He was taken to St. John's by a crew from Witless Bay and lost no time in commending the ten men for their bravery. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not clear what the meaning of this last comment may be, however it appears to be a derogatory remark towards Mr. Clow's performance of his official duties as Inspector of Weights and Measures. (Kevin Reddigan)

FATAL ACCIDENT AT FERRYLAND- JAMES CLOWE DIED FROM INJURIES WHILE ON HIS WAY TO HOSPITAL

An accident that ended fatally, occurred at Ferryland on Saturday afternoon, the victim being James CLOWE, a fisherman of that place. The accident was a peculiar one. Deceased was returning home from the fishing grounds in his motor boat and was leaning over the engine house when the fly wheel of the 7-horse power engine came off and smashing the woodwork, struck CLOWE with terrific force in the abdomen. He was knocked unconscious and on reaching shore was attended to by Dr. FREEBAIRN, while Rev. Father MAHER was also called. On recovering consciousness, it was seen that he was hurt internally, but it was not thought his conditions was so serious. Yesterday his condition became worse, however, and he suffered intense pain and it was deemed advisable to have him sent to the General Hospital. Sir. M. P. CASHIN received a message yesterday at noon telling him of the accident and as it was impossible to take him to the city by motor, asking that a steamer be sent. Sir Michael immediately arranged to send the Cabot and at 3.30 p.m. yesterday the ship left for Ferryland. Captain DALTON lost no time in getting there and at 7.40 last evening the ship left with the injured man on board. He was accompanied by his brother and another relative. All possible for his comfort on board the steamer was done but shortly after passing Cape Broyle he passed away. The Cabot thereupon returned to Ferryland with the body, where there is universal sympathy felt over his untimely end. Deceased, who was 24 years of age is survived by a widow and one child.
