| 1. | Edward Keough was born Abt 1796, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died 17 Dec 1876, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 19 Dec 1876, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:

Research Overview:
Edward Keough came to Newfoundland from Ireland about 1816 and eventually settled in the area known as Stone Island, on the northeastern headland of Caplin Bay. Some of Edward's descendants have stated that he came from New Ross, Co. Wexford, although recorded proof of this assertion has not been found. It is not known if Edward came alone, or if he was part of a family who settled elsewhere. There are a number of other Keough/Kehoe families with similar paternal forenames throughout Newfoundland, and while kinship with them has been suggested, it has never been proven. Edward Keough is first mentioned in the Ferryland Supreme Court records of 1830 in a case where he and several others were charged with building fishing premises that were allegedly interfering with the securing of fishing nets to the shoreline at Stone Island.
Edward's sons and daughters were all born and raised at Stone Island. However, by the time that they married and started their own families, the trend was to settle further "up the bay". This area, although farther away from the fishing grounds, was much more sheltered than the windswept headland at Stone Island. His sons built their houses and fishing premises at the head of the bay, in a small cove, southeast of the main beach. One son, Philip, eventually moved to Ferryland Head in the early 1870s to take up the position of Assistant Keeper of the newly constructed lighthouse. Edward's daughters also moved away from Stone Island when they grew up. Sarah and Catherine married into the Power family of Caplin Bay and settled close to their brothers at the head of the bay. Mary and Ellen married into the Shallow family of Clear's Cove, Fermeuse, several miles south of Caplin Bay, and eventually moved to Boston, Massachusetts.
All of Edward's children appear to have been received a fairly good education, much better than most of their contemporaries. The Journals of the Newfoundland House of Assembly show that Edward was a schoolmaster on the North Side for a number of years. On December 11, 1846, a school inspector visited "Stone Island Cove", however, his subsequent remarks, of what he observed on that occasion, were not too complimentary. He wrote "A Schoolmaster, Mr. Edward Keough, is appointed, to this very small settlement, with a salary of £8. He shewed me his list of 24 names. He was absent the day I called here, but I waited for his return, and sent out to collect what children could be found. They have been taught absolutely nothing, nor could anything better be expected, from the total absence of every requisite. The appearance of abject poverty was extreme."
Despite this rather harsh report, the Education report published in the 1855 Journal of the House of Assembly shows that "Edward Kehoe" was still on the government payroll as schoolmaster at Caplin Bay North. The enrollment was given as 50 pupils and showed Edward's salary had increased to £12. The fact that Edward was a schoolmaster has led some family researchers to write that Edward may have been a professor in Ireland. However, I believe that it is unlikely that Edward's education ever went beyond the level required to teach basic education. If his roots were in New Ross, it is quite possible that his education was gained and nurtured from within a mercantile family. There are several references to merchants with that surname, usually spelled Kough, who were conducting business out of the inland port of New Ross on the River Barrow. Ferryland Court records show that that George and Thomas Kough & Co., of Ross, Wexford, established and ran a business at Cape Broyle for about three decades - from 1788 to at least 1816.

- Special Note: 1884, Ferryland, Newfoundland; Bravery Award
Notes:
Special Note:
Philip Keough is best remembered for his bravery in rescuing the crew of a ship from a dangerous reef near the lighthouse at Ferryland Head. He had been appointed Assistant Keeper shortly after the construction of the lighthouse in the early 1870s. On August 4, 1883, the Scandinavian ship, Octavia ran ashore on the reef during heavy seas. The ship's crew managed to get a rope ashore which was secured to a cliff by Keough. Philip, with a another line around his body, then entered the surf and assisted the crew of nine men to safe ground. During the rescue, Philip Keough put himself in grave danger, after the shore rope snapped and the boatswain of the ship was thrown into the sea. Keough "without hesitation plunged in again and at great risk rescued him". On April 2, 1884, Philip Keough was awarded a silver medal and a citation by Chief Justice Sir Frederick B.T. Carter on behalf of the Royal Humane Society. According to family sources, these awards are in the possession of Philip's grandsons (the sons of James Joseph Keough).
While the outcome of this event was a happy one, tragically Philip was beset with great sorrow in the years preceding his memorable feat. In 1878, he lost four of his children in a diphtheria epidemic. He lost two more of his children in 1881 and 1882, again probably to diphtheria.

| 10. | Ellen Keough (1.Edward1) was born Abt 1851, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 27 May 1902, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States; was buried Abt 29 May 1902. Notes:
Birth:
Ellen's calculated birth year based on the 1900 US Census (age 49) and her 1902 US death certificate (age 51) appears to be incorrect. Her first child was born in May 1860, so the likelihood of her birth year being 1850/1851 doesn't make sense. The 1900 US Census also indicates that they had been married for 36 years. Again this information doesn't make sense since it appears that they were likely married about 1859.

It appears that Pat's body was actually sent back to St. John's, Newfoundland so the logical conclusion is that he is actually buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Died:
The Newfoundland Vital Statistics death records states that he was accidentally killed on November 19, 1912, however his headstone says he died on November 16, 1912. The latter date is confirmed by the article below.
From the website - www.downtosea.com - Out of Gloucester. 16th - Patrick Keough, 27, native of Newfoundland, single, was killed on board the steam trawler Spray by being struck on the head by an iron block strap which fell from aloft.
An initial Massachusetts death record states that he was drowned and it gives the impression that his body was not recovered, however a later record states that his death was as a result of a "compound fracture of the skull caused by being accidentally struck by a falling body".

Michael Shallow (1874-1948). Athlete. Born Fermeuse. Shallow went to Boston in about 1890, and became interested in boxing. At the turn of the century he returned to St. John's, where he began a boxing and physical training club and occasionally fought visiting boxers. In 1905 he knocked out a well-known heavyweight visitor, Charles Farrell. Seeking the British Empire title in England later that year he knocked out Ben Taylor, a former heavyweight champion, and fought Jack Scales, the reigning Empire Champion, to a draw. The next year Shallow defeated contender Bill Johnson, earning a rematch with Scales later in the year. He became British Empire heavyweight champion when he knocked Scales out in the eighth round. He spent the next several years as a prize fighter in Britain. In 1910 Shallow returned to Newfoundland, taking a job as a pipefitter with the A.N.D. Co. at Grand Falls, where he made a great contribution as a sportsman. In addition to encouraging boxing and wrestling, he helped to organize sporting competitions, umpired baseball games and, even at an advanced age, occasionally demonstrated his pugilistic style with amateur performers.
