    Notes:

    According to the writings of Mr. Jim Joe O'Brien, Mary (maiden name unknown), from Wexford, Ireland was widowed about 1830 when her husband, Michael Ryan, was lost at sea. He indicated she had three sons at that time. Mr. O'Brien also wrote that she later married Edward Coady, who was also from Co. Wexford. However, surviving records indicate that it was actually James Coady, possibly of Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Family information indicates that this James Coady may have first married Joanna Ellis from Ferryland, and that Mary was actually his second wife.

    Notes:

    According to the writings of Mr. Jim Joe O'Brien, Michael Ryan would always refer to his father, Thomas Ryan, "as a true seaman, born on the sea". Michael's father was supposedly born on the high seas, about 1826, during the voyage from Co. Wexford, Ireland to Newfoundland. Although Mr. O'Brien mentions Thomas as the first child, Mary (Ryan) McKeirnan, daughter of Timothy Ryan, Thomas' brother, stated in the 1910 US Census that her father was born at sea. This would seem to indicate that Thomas and Timothy were a twin. This may be a possibility since descendants have had a number of sets of twins. Mary (Ryan) McKeirnan, a daughter of Timothy, had two sets of twins and a great grand-daughter also has twin sons,

    Thomas' marriage and the baptism of his first child, Bridget, are recorded in the Fermeuse/Renews parish records, but it is not known if he lived there for a while before returning to Cape Broyle.

    Mr. Jim Joe O'Brien, in his writings about Cape Broyle families, mentioned only one daughter, Mary, in the marriage of James Coady and the widow Mary ?? Ryan. However, the 1921 Newfoundland Census indicates that Margaret (Coady) Boland was born at Cape Broyle in 1844, so it appears that she too was their daughter..

    Died:
    No Vital Statistics death record was found for Margaret. She was recorded in the 1921 Newfoundland Census, but only one Margaret Boland was listed in the Calvert Voter's List for 1928, immediately after Timothy Boland's name. This appears to be his wife, who was also named Margaret.

    Information from the research of Enid O'Brien per Evening Telegram - Mar 18/1939

    "Suddenly on Mar 17, 1939, Mary, beloved wife of Bertram Brynildsen. Leaving her husband, 2 sons, James Brennan of Corner Brook and Thomas Brennan of Buchans, one dgt Mrs Ron Courage 4 stepdgts and one stepson, brother and sister. "

    Enid noted that the daughter married to Ron Courage was Elizabeth and the brother and sister were "Mikey Tom" and Elizabeth Hanlon. Since there is mention only of one brother and one sister, (as identifed), other siblings Bridget and Thomas must have been deceased by this time.

    Michael Ryan was a man of many ages. His age varied considerably in each Newfoundland census. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, it is indicated that he was born in May 1873 and 48 years old on his last birthday. In 1935, his age is recorded as 69, indicating that he was born about 1865/1866, however in 1945, ten years later, his age is given as 73 indicating that he was born about 1871/1872. His death notice says he was 84 years old when he died in March 1954, indicating a birth year of 1869/ assuming he would have been 85 in May of that year. The baptisms for Ferryland parish survive from late 1870, and there is no record of his birth recorded in the surviving records.

    Death notice in the Evening Telegram per Enid O;Brien - ET March 22, 1954 On Sunday night, March 21, 1954, Michael Ryan, age 84 years, of Cape Broyle. Leaves one sister, Mrs. Ellizabeth Hanlon, of this city. Two nephews, James Brennan (Corner Brook) and Thomas Brennan (St. John's). One niece, Mrs Ron Courage, 30 Waldegrave Street.

    This couple were living on Patrick St. The transcribed dates of their births and ages don't make sense; 184? looks like they should be 187?. Michael was likely 48 or 49. I also have indications that the original census documents indicate that Mary Hanlon was adopted.

    In the 1900 US Census, the family surname was recorded as KIRMAN. Bernard and Mary were living on 369 Main Street in Blackstone Township, MA. They had been married for 10 years, had 5 children, all of them still living. All children were born in Massachusetts, except for Mary, who is shown as being born in New York (state?). Bernard indicated that he was born in Ireland; Mary was born in Newfoundland of Irish parents. Both Bernard and Mary said they had come to the US in 1886.     This census shows the family living at 18 Burns Avenue in Blackstone, Worcester, MA. They had been married for 20 years and 8 of their 9 choldren were still living at that time. Bernard was employed as a bootmaker and the two eldest daughters also worked in a boot mill. It is interesting to note that Mary indicated that her father had been born at sea.

    In this census there was only two children still living at their parents home on 57 Burns Avenue, Millville, Worcester, MA, however, I noticed that Bernard Jr. was living at 54 Burns Avenue with his wife and daughter. Bernard Sr. was still employed as a fireman at a power station. Again this census states that both of Mary's parents were born in the Irish Free state (Ireland). In this census, Mary said she had entered the US in 1884.

    YOUTHFUL SKIPPER SUFFERED FROST BITE

    By the Trepassey train yesterday afternoon Austen CAREW, captain of the schooner Letty B., which was abandoned off Cape Pine Saturday morning last, arrived in town to enter the General Hospital for treatment for two frostbitten feet. He wasccompanied to town by Mr. P.J. CASHIN, representative of district of Ferryland, to which district CAREW belongs, and was met at the railways station here by Mr. P.F. MOORE the other district representative. A little later in the afternoon the Daily News obtained the following information from Mr. CAREW at the hospital Tuesday morning, January 27th, at 11:30 a.m. Austen CAREW, age 23 years, Stephen YARD, age
    22, and James CAREW, age 20 left St. John’s in the schooner Letty B. for Cape Broyle. The wind
    came up from the southeast and at 8:30 o’clock that night the schooner was off Petty Harbor
    Motion. The wind was so high that they had to run up shore and about 3 ½ miles off the land.

    The wind veered to the south south east and the weather became very thick. By 11 o’clock that night the jib was carried away, bowsprit broken and mainsail split. Wednesday the schooner lay to with the wind from the south and position probably off Cape Ballard. Thursday was spend looking for land. A squall came up from the northeast and during a lull Cape Race was sighted. Friday the schooner ran in for land again and just before a shut down of thick snow Cape Race was again sighted. She lay to under double reefed foresail with the wind blowing hard. Saturday morning at daylight the crew as usual tried the pumps, but the schooner was not making any water. Fifteen minutes after water could be heard in the hold swishing backwards and forwards. The pumps were kept going for two hours, but they could not gain on the inflow of water. It was then seen that the schooner was starting to fill. The dory was made ready and before the schooner was abandoned the water was over the top bunks. This was eight o’clock Saturday morning. The crew of three rowed from 8 o’clock to 1 o’clock before Cape Pine was sighted, their course being north west by north. When the dory arrived; in Trepassey at 8 p.m. after 12 hours rowing, it was half full of water. Captain Austen CAREE during that twelve hours got both his big toes frostbitten. Yesterday afternoon he was free of the severe pain. The schooner was owned by Mrs. Ernest CAREW, of Cape Broyle, and it could not be leaned if any insurance was carried.
