John said his father was born in Scotland and his mother was born in Ireland; Mary E. said both of her parents were born in Newfoundland. The census also indicated that they had had a total of four children, two surviving, at that time. They were next door neighbours of John J. and Bridget Foley from Newfoundland. (This appears to be John J. Foley and Bridget Rossiter from Caplin Bay)

This census shows the family living at 94 Valley St. Both John and Mary E. indicated their parents were born in Canada (English). Mary's mother, a widow, was also living with them at this time. The census also indicates that John and Mary had been married for 22 years, had 5 children, but only two were still alive. 1874 or 1894 was recorded as the year they entered the US. Both John and his eldest son, Donald, are shown as working in a Bell Shop.

In another part of the same house, there appears to be several other Newfoundlanders. They were John J.and Margaret Fahey, who appear to be the owners. They had been married for 35 years, but indicated they never had any children. (John Fahey and Margaret McDonald were married at Renews parish on January 19, 1875). It appears they entered the US in 1881 and John was working in a clock shop. They had two lodgers, one by the name of Luke Roseter. (This is likely Luke Rossiter from Caplin Bay)
