- Court Action: 1831, Ferryland, Newfoundland
- Voter: Between 1840 and 1849, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; William Wade, Stone Island
Notes:
There are no surviving records that indicate the origin of the Wade family of Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. The Wade surname in Newfoundland appears to be of Irish origin, however the name could also be English. William may have been born in Newfoundland, since there were Wades in the Conception Bay area as early as the 1770s. Although records at Ferryland show that a John and James Wade were employed there by John Carney in 1799/1800, there is no indication of a resisdent family with that surname anywhere within the immediate area. The first mention of a William Wade in the area was 1818.
Local oral tradition tends to subscribe to the belief that the Wades were the first family to settle at Stone Island on the northeastern headland of Caplin Bay. The Wade property was located on the west side of Stone Island River, which flows into a small cove that still bears their family name.
Court Action:
Surrogate Court: November 30, 1818 - Samuel Carter and Co. sued William Wade (location unspecified).
Court Action:
Supreme Court: On November 3rd of that year, a person recorded as William Slade (sic) was charged (with others) for erecting a fishing stage at Stone Island (Shooting Place). It was alleged that this structure interfered with the setting of other people's nets, which they had been setting there for 40 years. This person's name, in all likelihood, was William Wade, since there are no indications that a Slade family ever lived in the area. Why this name was recorded incorrectly is unknown, and the court records do not show that William Wade was ever charged under his proper name. The charges were been laid by Matthew Morry and Co. and Benjamin Sweetland and Co., fishing merchants of English origin, whose fishing operations were based at the head of Caplin Bay.
Court Action:
Supreme Court: On October 14 of that year, William Slade (location unspecified) was sued by James Morrisson. Again William's surname was recorded incorrectly as Slade, but no amendment was found to later revise the defendent's surname.
Died:
Daily News, St. John's, Newfoundland: Aug 7, 1928, page 4 - Voice from the Past.
"March 10, 1852. William Wade of Stone, Ireland, died today". (e-mail from Enid O'Brien - June 24, 2011). The word "Ireland" is obviously a publication error, and should read "Island". This error is confirmed by an entry of his death in Robert Carter's Journal. This date explains his absence from the Caplin Bay Voter's Lists from 1852 onward.
William married Yes, date unknown. Unknown [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2
| 2. | John "Johnny" Wade (1.William1) was born Abt 1824, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 19 Mar 1884, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 21 Mar 1884, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Voter: Between 1855 and 1859, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
- Land: 1870, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
The name John Wade first appears in the Voter's List at Caplin Bay in 1855, and again in 1859. In Lovell's Directory of 1871, he is listed at Caplin Bay as a farmer. Local oral tradition concerning Johnny Wade tends to paint a picture of a man who spent considerable time and effort clearing the land still referred to as Wade's Meadow. Fisherman, going to the fishing grounds very early in the morning, told of seeing Johnny Wade sitting on the cliffs above the cove, with his legs dangling over the edge, resting from a hard night's work.
The fact that Johnny worked at night and slept during the day was considered rather strange by the local population. This "eccentricity", coupled with a strong Irish belief in "the fairies", led many to speculate that the large boulders he moved while clearing his land could only have been moved with the help of the "little people". Superstition aside, Johnny was probably a very practical man. In the summertime, the cool clear moonlit nights on the cliffs overlooking Caplin Bay were certainly more favourable for hard labour than toiling in the midday heat. Obviously a physically strong man, with a good mastery of basic lever and fulcrum, Johnny skills as a farmer were lost on his superstitious neighbours.
Birth:
It is likely that Johnny Wade was born at Stone Island, but no record or reference was found to prove that conclusion.
Land:
On the 8th of February 1870, a Crown Land grant was recorded as follows: Index # 3119 Wade, John: Stone Island, Caplin Bay. A description of this land was later recorded in Crown Land's Volume 16, Folio 107. Unfortunately, this volume was destroyed in the Great St. John's Fire of 1892. Although the grant was never reregistered, it is my understanding that the original (or a copy) is still in the possession of a descendant of Martin Sullivan, who came into possession of the land, likely in the 1930s.

Generation: 3
| 3. | Mary Wade (2.John2, 1.William1) was born Abt 1853, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 12 Oct 1905, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 14 Oct 1905, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. |
| 4. | Catherine "Kitty" Wade (2.John2, 1.William1) was born May 1859, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 22 Dec 1934, Calvert, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 24 Dec 1934, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
According to local oral tradition, Kitty Wade was the last person to move from Stone Island to the main settlement of Caplin Bay. She lived alone at Stone Island in the old family home for a number of years after her sister, Mary, died. After Kitty moved from Stone Island, she lived on land at the foot of Galavan's Hill, just east of where the second generation of Sullivans had settled after they moved from Stone Island. Her old property, on the west side of Stone Island River eventually became the property of Martin Sullivan.
Died:
The 1921 Newfoundland Census says Kitty was born at Caplin Bay in May 1859, however her death certificate says she was born in Ferryland and that she was 82 when she died in 1934. If correct, this would indicate her birth was about 1852. It is not known which age is correct, and it seems unlikely she was born at Ferryland.
