    Research Overview:
    Matthew's surname is spelled several different ways (Phelan, Whealan, & Whalan) in the Voters Lists and other documents. Although we know the name is Irish, there is no indication if this Matthew came from Ireland, or if he may have been born in Newfoundland.

    Southern District Deeds - 1825 - 1888 -- Vol. 3 - Folio 3 - June 24, 1836 - (£10)

    This is for the sale of two pieces of property, with a dwelling house, known as Gregory's Plantation on the south side of Caplin Bay. The land is being sold by Matthew Morry of Caplin Bay, merchant, and it appears that Benjamin Sweetland of Caplin Bay and (Father) Timothy Browne, clerk (cleric?), of Ferryland are providing funds for the purchase. There is a fairly good description of both pieces of land. It notes that the boundary of one piece of land, is a fishing room owned by Matthew Morry. Another interesting part is that, although Matthew Morry appears to own the property and is selling it, the sale is conditional. He states that it is to be occupied by Matthew Whelan, his wife Margaret and their children, and that it is being sold "in Trust" for Margaret Whelan and her children. It also states that if Matthew Whelan dies, it is still to be used for the benefit of Margaret Whelan and her children, but if Margaret remarries, then the land would be used to benefit only whichever one of her children "seem most to require support and assistance". There is no explanation for these conditions.

    It appears that Luke Rossiter, who had immigrated to the US, had headstones erected for his parents and some of his siblings. This is a broken headstone, with missing sections. I suspect that Luke's mother, Bridget (d.1899) may be inscribed on a missing part (Kevin Reddigan).

    Out of Gloucester website: Lost - Thomas Rossiter, age 44, father of three children. The 113 foot Boston beam trawler Belle had been fishing on the Western bank of Nova Scotia and was on her way into port with sixty thousand pounds of fresh fish aboard including haddock and cod with a worth of six thousand dollars. The captain, Peter Linekin, stated by radio telephone that he was about 100 miles east of Boston and that the craft was having trouble and assistance was required. Then the radio silenced. The Belle, along with her crew of seventeen men, were never heard from again.

    Immigration:
    There are a number of manifests entries for Philomena, the earliest being October 1915 when she was 19 years old. The manifest shows that she had sailed to Sydney, Nova Scotia on the SS Kyle and she later entered the US (by train?) at Vanceboro, ME. She stated it was her intention to meet her uncle "Louis" Rossiter in Bristol, Connecticut. (Her uncle's name was actually Luke Rossiter). It appears that he had paid her own passage. Luke worked in a clock factory and at that time was boarding at 94 Valley Street, which was the home of John J. and Margaret Fahey.

    It is not known how long she stayed after 1915, but the next manifest shows that in September 1920 Philomena, this time accompanied by her sister Marcella, again entered the US headed for Bristol, Connecticut. (The manifest is not clear, but it implies that Marcella may not have been permitted to enter the US). They indicated that they had a contract to work there as waitresses for Harry Brown, prop. of the Endee House. There are indications from some manifest notes that Philomena may have left the US again in 1924.

    Again in May 1925, manifests show that Philomena entered the US through Vanceboro, Maine. It appears her destination this time was Charlestown, Massachusetts where her cousin Mrs. Edward O'Neil lived. In 1927, she again sailed to the US from St. John's, via Halifax, on the SS Nova Scotia, after a temporary stay in Newfoundland. Again her destination was given as the home of her cousin Mrs. E. O'Neil, 71 Moulton St, Charlestown, Massachusetts. She indicated that she planned to stay in the US indefinitely, however it appears she did not actually became a US citizen until May 1954.

    I believe the reference to Philomena's cousin should actually be "Mr." Edward O'Neill whose maternal grandmother was Margaret Rossiter. His wife's name was actually Mary Margaret (Murphy) from Ferryland and I cannot find any earlier kinship to her.

    Died:
    The U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) gives her birth date as 29 June 1896. According to the SSDI, Philomena and Arthur's last place of residence was in (North) Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire.

    Philomena married Arthur Arvidson Aft 1930. Arthur was born 5 Jan 1907, Sweden; died 26 Oct 1989, Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. [Group Sheet]
