| 5. | William Saunders (3.John2, 1.Eleanor1) was born Abt 1778, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Aft 1800; was buried Aft 1800. Other Events:
- Census: 1799/1800, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Census:
When the 1800 Census was enumerated at Ferryland in the fall of 1799 and winter of 1800, William, the eldest son, aged 22, was living in the family home. During the fishery 'off season' he was listed as a servant to his father, an indication that he was considered the primary male who performed the day to day chores and duties needed to survive the harsh Newfoundland winter conditions.
During the 1800 fishery season, the extended census recorded that William was a fisherman. He and his younger brother, John Jr. (later known as John William), were crew members, under their father, John Sr., the boat-master of a 5 man shallop, fishing on behalf of John Hill &Co.
In later years, William's brother, John William, became very prominent as a merchant, a Justice of the Peace, and was appointed to other Crown positions. However, no obvious trace of William surfaced in any of the surviving records, so it is unclear if he died young, or moved out the area.
Died:
All later references to a William Sanders/Saunders after 1800 appear to refer to William's first cousin, that is, William (son of Daniel).

Ferryland District - Surrogate Court Records - (ca 1800 - 1820's)
9 January 1816 - Ann Sanders and her brother Robert Sanders, grandchildren of Robert Carter (Magistrate/JP) of Ferryland, were present at the division of property called Carter's Plantation located at Aquaforte. Also present was Matthew Morry Jr, Ann's husband. Witnesses/Arbitrators: Tree, Francis; Sweetland, Benjamin.
The property being divided was part of the holdings that Robert Carter Esq. had given to "his daughter (Mary Sanders) and her issue", prior to her death. Her surviving husband, Daniel Sanders, was not mentioned in this transaction.
Residence:
It is not clear when Aquaforte was settled, but based on the Ferryland District Census of 1799/1800, there were no people enumerated there as residents. However, we know from various colonial records that several prominent and influential merchants of Ferryland, particularly the Bengers and Carters, held large tracts of land at Aquaforte. It is noted in these colonial records that, about 1776, members of the Carter family built a variety of houses, even a stone house, there. There is no evidence they lived at Aquaforte since Ferryland was their main place of residence.

Robert 'Sanders' signed this petition as one of "the principal, but poor Inhabitants" of that settlement. This memorial, signed by Robert and fourteen other heads of families, was then forwarded to Lord Goderich, Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Residence:
In both Lovell's 1871 Directory and McAlpine's 1870/71 Directory. there is a reference to a William Saunders living at 239 Gower Street in St. John's city. In Lovell's, William's occupation is given as a carpenter, while McAlpine's refers to his occupation as a ship carpenter.
In Sharp's Directory 1885/6, and Might's 1890 Directory, this same street address was occupied by William's son, John, who is listed as a ship carpenter.
As far as I can tell, this Gower Street address was very close to the area known as Theatre Hill, hence the reference to it in William's newspaper death notice. My research indicates that this location was commonly used in reference to the area of Queen's Road from the foot of Long's Hill to the junction of New Gower Street. It seems that official references to Theatre Hill may have disappeared after much of St. John's city was rebuilt after the Great St. John's Fire of 1892.
Buried:
The headstone information differs from the details carried in the local St. John's newspapers. The newspapers indicated that when William died in 1877, his age was 87. However, there is ten year difference in the age inscribed on his headstone. It states William was 77 years old when he died.

- Baptism: 1 Aug 1824, Renews, Newfoundland

Illegitimate
Baptism:
This record indicates that Sally was baptized at Renews by the Rev. C. Blackman, the Episcopalian Missionary stationed at Ferryland. He recorded that she was the illegitimate daughter of John Saunders, a merchant and planter at Renews and May Markin (or Martin), a pauper, of the same place.
The date is uncertain since these records appear to have been extracted from earlier documents and they are not necessarily in the proper chronological sequence. Another transcribed record says Sally was baptized on 21 Aug. 1824 and that her surname was Martin.

Census:
In the 1881 Canada Census, William Saunders, 67, a stevedore, was living in an Insane Asylum. He was a Roman Catholic, born in Newfoundland.
Special Note:
The name William Saunders appears as a witness at the marriages of three daughters of James and Joanna (Evoy) Saunders at St. Mary's Basilica in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1840s and 1850s. These events suggest a close kinship, and although I found no documented proof that William was their brother, I believe it is a strong possibility.
Buried:
William is commemorated on the same headstone as James and Johanna Saunders and one of their granddaughters.

Ferryland Court Records
15 1837 John Sanders Junr. Charged with obstructing the constables in execution of their duties.
22 Nov. 1838, Grand Jury List - John Sanders member. It was recorded that the Magistrates/J.P. present were: Robert Carter, Peter Winser, Alan Goodridge, and J.W. Sanders, Esq.
Court Action:
In today's world the term 'Junior' is usually applied when referring to a son with the same forename as his father. However, in earlier times it was also used to distinguish between any two males, with the same names, to identify the subject person by virtue of his relative age. Based on a search of various Ferryland Court records, a younger John Sanders was first recorded about 1837. He was referred to as John Sanders, Junr. in two records and later in 1838 just as John Sanders in another record.
Court of Sessions - Southern Circuit Minutes
15 February 1837 - Sanders, John Junr.(and others) charged with obstructing the constables in the execution of their duties.
27 February 1838 - Penny, Edward vs. Sanders, John Junr. Penny claimed John had threatened him. This incident was likely in relation to Penny assaulting a Thomas Sanders on the previous day, February 26. Also on February 27, and likely because of the same incident, Penny charged Richard Sanders with assaulting him.
22 November 1838 - John Sanders - Member of the Grand Jury. The Magistrates/JPs at this session were Robert Carter, Peter Winser, Alan Goodridge and J.W. Sanders Esq. The latter was likely John Sanders' uncle.
Voter:
In 1840 and 1841, the Voter Lists for the settlement of Ferryland, recorded John Sanders's 'place of abode' as the North Side. In 1842, it lists a John Saunders at Cold East [Point], and likewise, a John Sanders is listed at the same 'place of abode' in 1844. A later update notation, written in the 1844 Voters List, states 'died 1845'. The validity of this update note is questionable since there is no other reference to indicate that it is factual.
To add to the confusion, the baptism records at St. John's show a son, James, was baptised there to John and Catherine in May 1842. While this baptism suggests James was born at St. John's and his family had moved there, this may not have been the case. The Voters Lists raise the possibility that John and Catherine may have lived at Ferryland until 1844. The next three children for this couple were baptised at St. John's between February 1845 and September 1847 before they moved on to Nova Scotia.
John married Catherine Madden 1840, Holy Apostles Parish, (Fermeuse/Renews), Newfoundland. Catherine was born Abt 1821, Renews, Newfoundland; died Aft 1865; was buried Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]
