Generation: 2
| 2. | Johanna Malone (1.Jeffrey1) died 1 May 1848, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 3 May 1848, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
Johanna was in all likelihood the daughter of Jeffrey Malone. The fact that one of her sons was named Jeffrery (Geofrey), supports this speculation. Johanna may have been born in Co. Waterford, Ireland, or Ferryland. The Malone family is first mentioned at Ferryland in 1816. In 1816, Jeffrey Malone, who owed money to the merchant firm of Samuel Carter & Co, was forced to sign over his property as surety for the debt. This property was located at Fox Hill and occupied by Maurice Fitzpatrick at that time.
In 1818, Maurice Fitzgerald left his land to the wife of Jeffrey Malone, so it appears that he may have been a relative, possibly a brother. It is not clear if this was the same property, formerly owned by Jeffrey Malone, that he had occupied in 1816 at Fox Hill. It is quite possible that Johanna inherited the land at Fox Hill that eventually became the Healey homestead.

- Census: 1930, Plainville, Hartford, Connecticut, United States
Notes:
Birth:
His headstone says he was born in 1862.
Immigration:
An immigration record shows that Edward Foley sailed from St. John's on the ship Carthaginian and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 23 May 1892. On the same day, another immigration record shows that Edward Foley, born in 1858 in Newfoundland, entered Boston, Massachusetts, United States, sailing from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on the ship Worcester.
Census:
In the 1900 US Census, it appears that Edward, his wife Mary, and his sisters Flora and Katheren (sic) were all living in the same household in Bristol, Connecticut. It was recorded that Edward moved to the US in 1892, Mary in 1893, and both Flora and Katheren arrived there in 1895.
Census:
In the 1910 US Census, Edward and Mary lived at Jacob St. in Bristol, Connecticut with an adopted daughter named Lillian. Contrary to the 1900 US Census, this census states that Edward entered the US in 1896.
Census:
In the 1920 US Census, the surname was recorded as Fouley or Fowley, likely due to its phonetic rendering in the Irish Newfoundland dialect. Their adopted daughter, Lillian, was still living with them. Some of the given information was incorrect, possibly given by Lillian. It states that Edward was born in Newfoundland but Mary was born in Nova Scotia. It gives their immigration years as 1885 and 1886 respectively. The family was still living on Jacob St.
Census:
Edward, Mary and Lillian were recorded as living together on Maple St. in Plainsville in 1930. Lillian, recorded as being single, gave her age as 27 years. She was a nurse at a hospital (unspecified). However, it appears that Lillian M. Foley, a registered nurse, was recorded again in the same census, at the New Britain Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut.

In 1910, Hannah, age 38, was a passenger on the Rosalind, from St. John's, Newfoundland along with her children Dannie age 5, Eddie age 3, and Mary 6 months. She gave her place of birth as Ferryland and her next of kin in Newfoundland as Mrs. H. Shea, 19 Stevens St., St. John's. She declared that she and her children were joining her husband Joseph Shea, who was already in the US and living at 695 Henry St. in Brooklyn, New York. Also in her 1910 declaration, Hannah indicated she had been in the US before, in 1903. I did not find a record for that year, but another immigration record shows that she did enter the US in 1899 and was working in Bristol, CT per the 1900 Census. We know that she later returned to Newfoundland where she married Joseph Shea in 1902.
