Generation: 2
| 2. | Francis Tree (1.Bridget1) was born 12 Dec 1762, Boston, Massachusetts, British North America; died 19 Jan 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland; was buried 22 Jan 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland. Other Events:
- Military: 1778, Boston, Massachusetts, British North America
- Property: 10 Sep 1787, Ferryland, Newfoundland
- Petition: 18 Dec 1826, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Military:
Near the end of the American Revolution, Francis Tree (Jr.) served briefly as a seaman on board the brig, Hazard, commanded by Capt. John Foster Williams. A record indicates he was engaged 27 June 1778 and discharged 14 Oct. 1778, with a total service of only three months, 19 days.
As per his mother's account in "The Newfoundland Journal of Aaron Thomas - 1794" pp. 110 - 112, her son [unnamed but I assume Francis Jr.] had "served under General Washington in the American Army" [Navy?], and was a "Citizen of the States of America".
However, some years later, while in London, England, Frances Jr. was taken by a British naval "press gang" and forced to serve in the Royal Navy. According to his mother, in 1794 he was still in naval service on board the Royal George, a "British Ship of War". This indiscriminate use of impressment of American sailors by the British was one of the major causes of the War of 1812.

Newfoundland 1826 Vol 2. Public Offices and Miscellaneous Colonial Office 194/73 [Reel B-694]
Pages 409-410 18 Dec 1826 from Francis Tree to [Lord] Bathurst
Francis Tree complained that he has lost his position of deputy sheriff of Ferryland under the [Royal] Charter, he now asks for some relief, to remove to St. John's and set up "a house of Board, and Lodging" to support his large family in these hard times. Reference to the service that he and his family have given to the public good, including his father's role in assisting when HM Brig Trepassey, Capt. Henry Edwin Stanhope, was "on shore at Ferryland, with the loss of both Masts and Rudder." Stanhope left his father with a letter of thanks. Helped many other naval officers by serving as pilot into Caplin Bay.

| 8. | Sarah Glascott (3.Susannah2, 1.Bridget1) was born Abt 1790, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Abt 8 May 1870, West Derby District, Lancashire, England; was buried 10 May 1870, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Other Events:
- Baptism: 28 Feb 1790, St. John's, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
No birth record was located for Sarah, but it is quite possible she was born at Ferryland, Newfoundland, the home settlement of her mother, Susannah.
In the 1851 England Census, Sarah's age was recorded as 61 and her place of birth is quite clearly shown as Newfoundland. However in the 1861 England Census, her place of birth was "dittoed" as Kingstown, Ireland, the place of birth noted after her husband's name. It appears that this was the Kingstown, Co. Dublin that was renamed DĂșn Laoghaire about 1920.
Baptism:
Sarah's family surname appears to be have been interpreted as Glascol in her baptism entry transcribed into the Dept. of Public Health and Welfare (DPHW) registers. These records were transcribed from the original registers in the 1940s. There is a possibility that name in the original could have been spelt Glascot, but the DPHW transcriber could not see, or failed to notice the cross of the letter t. Of course, Glascot was a variation of the surname Glascott sometime used along with several other variant spellings.
There were three other Ferryland children baptised on the same day as Sarah. This could indicate that these baptisms were performed at Ferryland by a visiting clergyman or the families traveled together to St. John's to have their children baptised. As opposed to the requirement of timely baptisms under the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican baptisms were often left for long intervals after births, even years in some cases. Therefore I am inclined to believe the former scenario since the end of February was a less than ideal time of the year for sea travel with women and children.
Buried:
Gravesite Details Age: 80 years. "Death date" is burial date.
Sarah married Thomas Hasler 14 Sep 1814, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Thomas was born Abt 1793, Knockmullen, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died Abt 4 Mar 1874, West Derby District, Lancashire, England; was buried Abt 6 Mar 1874, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. [Group Sheet]

- Baptism: 9 Dec 1794, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland
Notes:
Birth:
The name of this area appears to have two spellings, Creacon and Creaken. The first one may pertain to the the spelling that the Glascott family used for their estate but the official government address refers to the area as Lower Creaken, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

Buried:
Pioneer Cemetery, aka Old Burying Ground (Craig St. Cemetery) Anglican Section of the cemetery.
I found a picture of a headstone in this cemetery for Lucy but it is very hard to read. However it indicates that Lucy died on the 21 Aug 1848. Her age appears to be 49 yrs.If correct, the birth date (1795)given in Burke's Landed Gentry is off by several years.

| 11. | Francis Glascott (3.Susannah2, 1.Bridget1) was born Abt Nov 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died Yes, date unknown. Other Events:
- Baptism: 5 Nov 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland
- Military: Abt 1810, Ireland
Notes:
Baptism:
While it would make sense that there would be a "Francis" in this family, since both of his grandfathers was so named, I couldn't find any documented reference to prove that he actually existed.
Military:
Burke's "Landed Gentry" states Francis had military service. It says he died, unmarried, having been a midshipman in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars. He supposedly joined or was impressed into the Royal Navy about 1810.
I searched the military records in the UK National Archives but couldn't find a service record that matches a Francis Glascott.

Died:
When William Glascott died, even though he was living in the United States, the Perth Courier [Ontario, Canada] of April 30, 1875 carried this "In Memoriam" article. For easier reading, I have added paragraph breaks and some bracketed entries to clarify some of the information.
William Glascott died on Sat. April 10th at 8:00 pm at his residence on Market Street, Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin, aged 70 years of age. He was the third son of John Glascott, Esq., near New Ross, County of Wexford, Ireland, (at which place he was born in April of 1805) and Susan (Tree), his wife, a native of Newfoundland.
When about 13 years old, his father and mother died suddenly, confiding him and his brothers and two sisters (all minors) to the care of his uncle, the Rev. Wm. Glascott, of Pilltown, Chaplain, who, however, with systematic cruelty and selfishness, appropriated their estate and sent the orphans to America and there left those reared in the lap of luxury to battle with the stern hardships incident to a new country.
At the age of 18 years, William took a contract on the Erie Canal at Lockport [NY], employing 300 men. Afterwards he went to Canada and bought and cleared a farm in Bathurst Township, County of Lanark [Ontario].
In the early settlement of the county, he, with other pioneers, quite frequently carried 100 pounds of flour on his back through the unbroken forest, a distance of 40 miles, with no road but the foot track and the blazed trees to guide his path; while those who had flinched from him his rightful patrimony, reveled in wealth and luxurious ease. Here he married Catherine, daughter of John Campbell, Esq., and Margaret Stuart, his wife, of Portagal [likely Fortingall], Perthshire, Scotland. Having impaired his health somewhat by hard labor, he sold his farm and bought property in Perth and engaged actively in business.
For some eight years he had the Royal Mail contract, running from horse coach daily between Brockville and Perth on the St. Lawrence River. He then moved west to Milwaukee and shortly afterwards settled in Monroe, where he resided for about 20 years. Some years ago he was gun struck and suffered from the wound almost every warm season since. His health had been poor for the last few years by reason of the disease that was silently and steadily shortening his life. He was bedfast only about a week and died of dropsy of the heart.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church and afterwards of the Presbyterian. He died firm in the faith of a glorious resurrection and blessed immortality which after all are the only two riches. He was a man of great physical powers with a very active and powerful mind. Genial, kind, sociable and unselfish almost to a fault, he was one of nature's true nobility. He cared nothing for title of rank, but indulged in the hope that one day his cause would be righted.
The family title is "Glascott of Pilltown". Glascott of Pilltown in the County of Wexford and Kingdom of Ireland , beareth for arms on a field of azure, two eagle claws crossed a la quise Argent, barways armed. Crest, an eagle displayed with two heads party per pale Argent and azure armed sable. Motto, the Latin for 'Adorned with Valor'. He has left a widow, six sons and four daughters to mourn his loss. May he rest in peace.
William married Catherine Campbell 11 Aug 1825, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America. Catherine was born Abt 1805, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom; died 1886, Bertie Twp, Welland County, Ontario, Canada . [Group Sheet]

- Residence: 1894-1897, St. John's, Newfoundland
- Will: 1897, St. John's, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
Ann and her brother, John, were baptised in the St. Luke's Anglican Church at Ferryland, Newfoundland on the same day. No birth dates or place of birth were given in the church records. However, on John's Seaman's Certificate issued to him in 1852, it is stated that John was born at St. John's, Newfoundland.
Ann's age was given as 75 in her Newfoundland Vital Statistics record so it is possible that she could have been born as early as 1822.
Land:
In his will, Philip Tree, left all of his property at Caplin Bay to his grand-niece, Ann Hart, daughter of John Munn and Susanna Tree. He also stipulated that the Tree property at Ferryland was to initially to go to his sister-in-law Ann Tree (widow of Francis) but upon her demise that property too should be passed on to Ann Hart.
Court Action:
When Philip Tree died in 1849, it appears no action was taken by his executor, George Hart, husband of Ann Hart, to have Philip's will probated in a timely fashion. The will was not actually probated until nine years later, in 1858.
Assuming that the Philip's heirs divided his properties as stipulated in his will, Ann Hart and her grandmother, Ann Tree, were entitled to collect rent or lease money for their respective holdings. Ann Tree passed away 1865, as did Ann Hart's husband, George. Upon the death of her grandmother in 1865, Ann Hart, then became entitled to all of the former Tree property at Caplin Bay and Ferryland.
I can't tell what happened over the next fourteen years but finally in 1879, Ann Hart petitioned the Supreme Court to have the land holdings at Caplin Bay declared legally hers. The defendants named in the suit were Robert Boland and James Power, whom I determined were sons-in-law of the deceased Michael Hearne, the original lessee. About the same time, another writ was issued to the executrix of the estate of "Edward" Hanrahan to recover a debt of $84. The property location is undisclosed in the writ, but I believe it was at Ferryland, where the District Sheriff "Edmund" Hanrahan had died in 1875.
Later in 1879, the Supreme Court upheld Ann's petition giving her sole rights to the property at Caplin Bay. The outstanding debt on the property, likely at Ferryland, is not mentioned thereafter, indicating that the debt was likely settled out of court within the estate of Edmund Hanrahan.
Residence:
Ann Hart wid. George h. Military Road
Will:
On the 6 December 1896, Ann Hart wrote her last will and testament. She died, a little over a year later, on the 27 December 1897. In her will, he left the lion's share of her worldly possessions (both monetary and property) to Annie Hart, daughter of her late son George Francis Hart. She noted that Annie was living with her in Newfoundland at that point in time. She also asked her executor to set up an investment scheme which would generate income to be split evenly between Annie and her brother, George (who lived in England) while they were still minors.
There is no specific mention of the former property holdings at Caplin Bay and Ferryland. It is unclear what arrangements were made for their disposal between 1879 and 1896.
