 1795 - Abt 1840 (45 years)
Generation: 1
| 1. | Jean Baptiste Publow was born 1795, Kortrijk, Flanders, Belgium; died Abt 1840. Other Events:
- Military: Oct 1815, Montreal, Quebec; Meuron´s Swiss Regiment #1899
Notes:
Birth:
There are several other spellings, Cortriax, Cortriaz, Courtrai,or Courtray based on the phonetic rendering of the town's name.
Name:
It is believed that the name John Publow was an anglicization of Jean Baptiste Publon.
Military:
It appears that Jean Baptiste was part of the Swiss De Meuron Regiment. After fighting in Europe, some of the regiment was sent to Lower Canada to fight against the Americans in 1813. After peace was restored, this regiment was disbanded starting in December 1815. It appears Joan Baptiste Publon,(service #1899) was 20 years old. Although the date of the entry Regimental Book was 17 Nov. 1815, a notation at the end of that entry states "discharged at Canada 4th June". Obviously Jean chose to stay in North America rather than go back to Europe.
Jean married Lucinda "Lucy" Glascott Abt 1822. Lucinda (daughter of John Glascott and Susannah Tree) was born 1 Jan 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died 21 Aug 1845, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America; was buried 22 Aug 1845, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America. [Group Sheet]

Birth:
John's age is all over the place and recording it depends on which document seems most accurate. It is not clear exactly what year he was born but I inclined to believe 1824 may be the most accurate.
Died:
John, a mechanic, was recorded as being 50 years old on his 1877 death certificate. However his age, recorded in the 1871 Canada Census, also says he was 50 years old at that time.
