In the 1871 Canada Census, there is a listing for a William Saunders (age 42) who was born in Newfoundland. He is recorded as being a Roman Catholic, living in a Hospital for the Insane. His occupation was recorded as a stevedore.

In the 1881 Canada Census, William Saunders, 67, a stevedore, was living in an Insane Asylum. He was a Roman Catholic, born in Newfoundland.
Special Note:
The name William Saunders appears as a witness at the marriages of three daughters of James and Joanna (Evoy) Saunders at St. Mary's Basilica in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1840s and 1850s. These events suggest a close kinship, and although I found no documented proof that William was their brother, I believe it is a strong possibility.
