Birth:
Michael's brother, Robert, who arrived later at Caplin Bay identified his origin as being in the Parish of Killea, Co. Waterford, Ireland.

Name:
The Power surname was also recorded as "Poor" since that was how the surname was often pronounced locally, even into the twentieth century.

Research Overview:
There is strong evidence that the Powers came from Co. Waterford, Ireland, likely from the south western shore of Waterford Estuary, not far from Passage East, an important stopover point for most transatlantic voyages to Newfoundland. It is probable that the Powers were fishermen and seamen before they crossed the Atlantic, unlike many of their fellow countrymen who had never seen the ocean before their voyage west.

Michael Power was one of the earliest settlers at Caplin Bay. In the book "Newfoundland Journal of Aaron Thomas" - who was probably a steward or purser on the H.M.S. Boston, a British man-of-war tells, that while at Caplin Bay in 1795, he came upon "a House in the Woods, kept by an Irishman of the name of Poor, a man of about 40, who had marry'd a young wife, very fair and beautifull. They had four children, were tolerably well-to-do in the world and seemed a happy Couple".

Another section of the same document dubbed "A list of names of all Masters, Servants, and Dieters residing in the District of Ferryland for the Winter of 1799 & Spring of 1800 - Capeland Bay" notes: Michael Power - dieter, working for Matthew Morry & Co. It appears that Michael Power was also listed as a master, with eighteen men (dieters) working for him.

Michael had children born in the late 1780s, so it is likely he was born in the 1750s/1760s. Aaron Thomas estimated his age to be about 40 when he met him in 1795 (born abt. 1755?). It appears that Michael had died by 1840, since there is only one Michael Power listed in the 1840 Voter's List at Caplin Bay. We can speculate that the Michael in the surviving Voter's List (1840 - 1859) is likely his son Michael Jr., who married in 1830.

John Power's name appears in the Voters List from 1840 to 1855, but his name is absent from the 1859 voters list. This likely indicates that he had died. A Michael Power, ( Jun.) was added to the list for 1859. The could be John's son Michael. As the oldest male in the household, he became eligible (by default) to vote.

Birth:
Catherine Power was born at Caplin Bay, with her twin sister, Alice, in 1799. It appears Catherine married Robert Holly (aka - Hally) of Ferryland at St. John's in 1826. However, in 1829, the marriage records at St. John's indicate that Catherine Poor (Power) and Patrick Evoy, both of Keplin (sic - Caplin) Bay were married there. No notation of prior marriages for either of them was mentioned in this marriage record.

Patrick Evoy died at Caplin Bay about 1860/1861. His name with the word (Dead) after it was noted on the 1859 Voters List. This note was likely an update made for the next Newfoundland election, scheduled for May 1861. However, it was also noted at the bottom of the Voters List that "Joseph Power, son of wid. Evoy" was to be the eligible voter for this household. This note is Very confusing, indeed!!

Research indicated that Patrick's biological son, John Evoy, (and his family??) were also living with his mother, Catherine. At that time, the 'one only voting privilege per dwelling' was granted to the most senior male residing there??

While it is possible that Catherine Power could have had an illegitimate son, Joseph Power, before her marriages, I suspect that this son's name was likely 'Joseph Holly/Hally'. Unfortunately the Voter's Lists after 1859 have not survived for Ferryland District so this rationale cannot be verified.

In a petition, dated 12 July 1864, Catherine Evoy requested Letters of Administration for the Caplin Bay property of her deceased husband, Patrick Evoy, "who died about three years ago without making a will, leaving property to the probable value of sixty pounds".

Catherine stated that she had two children, John and Ellen and that both were married by this time. She also stated that her son John Evoy and family were living in her dwelling.

A Catherine Evoy of Caplin Bay died on 26 Feb 1886. Deceased was the widow of the late John Evoy. Her recorded age appears to be 52, however, some researchers believe the faded newspaper entry says "62 years"??

Catherine Evoy's Letters of Administration petition identifies Ellen as the daughter of Patrick Evoy. Although there are some suggestions that Ellen may have had several brothers, it appears that John Evoy was her only brother. In 1864, the Evoy property at Caplin Bay was still in the possession of Patrick's wife, Catherine, but it appears it was later passed on to Ellen (Evoy) and her husband, Robert Swain Jr.

Robert and Ellen Swain's only son, John, moved away and died in 1894. Their daughters, Mary (Polly Ledwell), Elizabeth (Liz Miskill) and Catherine (Kate Walsh) eventually inherited this property. Elizabeth and Catherine married and lived in St. John's and sold their share of the property to the Sullivans. The share, belonging to Mary, who married Sebastian Ledwell from Little Placentia, remained within the Ledwell family.

The baptism records for Holy Apostles Parish show only six baptisms, one of which was for a son, Peter, who obviously died as an infant. It is unclear, if Alice actually left seven surviving children, however it is possible that other baptisms may have been recorded in Holy Trinity Parish at Ferryland. Unfortunately, records prior to 1870 are missing for that parish.

On Sept. 7, 1886, the magistrate at Ferryland wrote a letter to the Colonial Secretary informing him of a "sad calamity" at Caplin Bay. He stated that several poor families had lost all of their property in a fire there which started about 10:00 AM the previous day. He identified those left destitute as being "James Power, wife and nine children; Matthew Whelan, wife (an invalid) and three children; John Johnston, wife and two children; and Anne Clancy, an aged friendless widow" .....

Thomas Evoy was the godfather at the 1872 baptism of James Kelly, son of Martin Kelly and Anastasia Kane. I suspect that Thomas married Martin Kelly's sister, Catherine, in 1874.

Thomas Evoy appears to be the last male bearing that surname recorded in the Ferryland area. I have speculated that he was likely the son of John Evoy, and grandson of Patrick and Catherine Evoy of Caplin Bay. No later records have been found to prove or disprove this possibility. All references to the Evoy surname disappeared from Ferryland District church records after the baptism of Thomas' daughter in 1878.

Two different death dates are recorded in Vital Statistics for Mary Ledwell: June 7, 1931 - cancer and January 7, 1932 - old age. The age in both records is given as 78. Mary's headstone transcribed information says she died 6 June 1931 at 73 years old.

There appears to be two entries in the Holy Apostles baptisms for this individual - Dec 30 1859 and July ?? 1860. The godfather is listed the same, but one says the godmother was Sarah Kehoe and the other entry says Catherine Kehoe.

Died:
It appears that John left Caplin Bay in the 1880s and went to work in the copper mines at Little Bay, on the western shores of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Little Bay, once called Indian Bight, is a community 16 kms north of Springdale, Newfoundland. When the copper reserves started to deplete in the early 1890s, many of the miners who had settled there, also worked at their previous livelihood - fishing. This appears to have been John's situation. However, John was killed in a mining accident in 1894. His occupation at the time of his death was listed as a smelter. His widow, Mary, is listed as still living in Indian Bight (Little Bay) in 1898.

No baptism record could be found at Ferryland or Renews for Elizabeth. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, her birth month and year was recorded as Jun 1877. However in the 1935 Newfoundland Census, her age was given as 66. That age indicates that she was born abt. 1869. Her Vital Statistics death record says she was 71 when she died in 1943 (b. abt. 1872). Given that no baptism record was found at Holy Trinity RC Parish, it appears 1869 may be her most credible year of birth.

In the 1921 Census, Michael's age was given as 49 (born about 1872) However, no baptism record was found for this individual suggesting he was likely born before 1870. In the census, Michael's recorded age is three years older than his brother William, with whom he lived. If he was older than William, then based on the 1940 Vital Statistics death age (74) for William, it is likely that Michael was born before 1866. The 1928 Voter's Lists indicate that Michael was eligible to vote that year but he is missing from the 1935 Census. Evidence that Michael was the eldest son seems plausible since he may have been named for of his grandfathers, both of whom were named Michael.

In the Business Directories from 1898 to 1904, William's names appears at Caplin Bay. Since his name was unique in that settlement, no effort was made to identify his father's name in any of the entries. Likewise in the Voters Lists of 1900 and 1908, he is listed without any references to father's name.

This William Power was recorded in the 1935 Newfoundland Census. His age in that census was given as 65 (born abt. 1870). However a Vital Statistic death record for a William Power in 1940 gives his age as 74 (born abt. 1866). His wife Alice is recorded as a widow in the 1945 Newfoundland Census.

A 1993 inscription of headstones indicates that Joseph's name was included on the very bottom his father's headstone. It appears the inscription was covered up when the headstone was repaired with concrete.

Buried:
About 1983 there was an old white marble headstone still visible in Ferryland RC Cemetery for Michael Sullivan. It was in poor condition, but parts of it were still legible. This stone eventually crumbled and disappeared, however a new memorial cross, near his parent's headstones, was erected by family members in 2015. (Kevin Reddigan)

Died:
Mike died while at the seal hunt in April 1897. He and his cousin Tom Swain, of Caplin Bay, were shipmates on the Aurora out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Tom Swain died on April 2, 1897, and Mike Sullivan died a few days later, on April 6, 1897, both from diphtheria. Their deaths are commemorated in the Newfoundland folk song "The Spring of 97".
