Abt 1770 - Aft 1844 (~ 74 years)
Generation: 1
| 1. | Elenor "Nelly" [-?-] was born Abt 1770, Ireland?; died Aft Apr 1844, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Aft Apr 1844, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Research Overview: 1794 - 1844, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
Nelly's birth place is speculative. It is possible that she was born in Newfoundland.
Name:
Maiden name undetermined.
Research Overview:
Elenor's maiden name is not known. She was first married to Michael Evoy who died in 1798. Census records indicate that she was married again ( to James Walsh) by the end of 1799. The court records show that she ran a pub at Ferryland for at least ten years in the late 1790s and the early 1800s. It would appear that Elenor was the main proprietier of the pub and when the "going got rough", she didn't step aside and let the men handle things. Elenor's prominence in the court records leaves no question as to who was in charge of the business.
Surrogate Court Records: December 29, 1794 - Evoy, Elenor - Charged this person with assault: Rowe, Moses.
A presentation by Willeen Keough at the Family History Seminar, Newfoundland & Labrador Genealogical Society on October 16, 1999 sheds further light on the boisterous nature of Elenor's occupation. She wrote:
"We can also see from the court records that women provided hospitality to the fishing servants and travelers in public houses in the district, because we see their names on liquor licenses in the records. Elenor Evoy was one such woman, and this overhead shows her name on the list of liquor licenses for 1799."
"Elenor's occupation actually caused her to be involved in a couple of disturbances that were taken up before the magistrates in the late 1790s and early 1800s. In 1795, she brought Michael Ryan to court, claiming he had assaulted her, abused her and defamed her character. Two witnesses for Elenor stated that they had seen some girls outside Elenor's establishment throwing rocks at Michael. He had, in turn, told them to "leave it off" and threatened to beat Elenor, accusing her of keeping a bawdy house.
Later, in court, Michael explained that he had spoken "from passion" because the girls were tormenting him, but he was fined £5 nonetheless and ordered to keep the peace. Several years later, Elenor's husband, Michael Evoy, died and she married James Walsh. The new couple continued to run the public house. As this next overhead shows, one night in late March 1803, Elenor and James, his brother? Sylvester, and Elenor's son (by her first husband) Patrick Evoy broke into the house of another publican family in Ferryland - Adam and Ann McLarthy - and assaulted and "ill-used" them."
District Court Records: April 1, 1803 McLarthy, Adam: Charged this person with assault: Welsh, James. McLarthy, Ann: Charged this person with assault: Welsh, Sylvester. McLarthy, Ann: Charged this person with abusing her: Evoy, Patrick.
"The records are not specific about the cause of the assault, but it looks to me like a "turf war" between two rival firms, and the womenfolk - Elenor and Ann - were right in the thick of the fray. (This time, Elenor and her cohorts were fined and ordered to keep the peace)."
Elenor eventually left behind the rowdy pub environment at Ferryland for a quieter life as the wife of fisherman/ farmer James Walsh at Caplin Bay. However, even later in life, she was not easily intimidated nor afraid to "stand her ground". In 1829, she was back in court after an altercation with a neighbour at Caplin Bay. By this date, Elenor (Nelly) was probably over 60 years old.
District Court Records: September 28, 1829 - Walsh, Nelly. This Caplin Bay woman was charged with assaulting: Congdon (sic), Catherine.

Generation: 2
| 2. | Patrick Evoy (1.Elenor1) was born Abt 1787, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Abt 1861, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 1861, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Voter: 1840-1859, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
Patrick was the eldest son of Michael Evoy and his wife Elenor (Ellen, Nelly in certain documents) who were proprietors of a public house in Ferryland throughout the 1790s. His father, Michael, died in 1798 and about a year later, his mother married James Walsh. Elenor and James Walsh continued to run the pub at Ferryland for a period of time, and then moved to Caplin Bay about 1805. It appears that when they moved to Caplin Bay, some, or all, of Elenor's children, from her first marriage, moved with them.
Voter:
Patrick's name appears in all the surviving voter's lists for Caplin Bay from 1840 to 1859. A notation, after Patrick Evoy's name in the 1859 voter's list, says "dead". It is not known when this entry was made; but it was likely an update for the next election, which was in May 1861.
Died:
An 1864 Letters of Administration petition states that Patrick Evoy had "died about three years ago....."
Patrick married Catherine Power 12 Nov 1829, St. John's RC (Basilica) Parish, St. John's, Newfoundland. Catherine (daughter of Michael Power and Alice Hearn(e)??) was born 1799, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died Aft 1864, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Aft 1864, Non-denominational Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Surrogate Court Records - Nov. 20, 1817 - John Evoy - Planter of Ferryland paid Shannon - Levingston money owed by James Walsh. Witness: Robert Wakeham.
Died:
This date of death comes from a petition submitted by Patrick Evoy, in 1831, to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland requesting Letters of Administration to the estate of his late brother, John Evoy. From this document we learn that John, who was not married, had died in Jun 1825, without leaving a will. We also learn that at least three of their sisters had survived to adulthood and were now married.

- Research Overview: Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
In the 1800 Ferryland Census, this child is identified as Catherine Evoy, daughter of Michael Evoy who died in the latter half of 1798. It is possible that Catherine Evoy may have also been known as Catherine Walsh, since her widowed mother married James Walsh very shortly after Micheal Evoy died. As a matter of fact, Patrick Evoy stated in a later court document that his father, Michael, had three daughters when he died, the inference being that Catherine was not born at that time. The 1800 Ferryland Census shows four Evoy daughters, with Catherine noted as being the youngest at 1 1/2 years old.
Research Overview:
On the death certificate of Richard Reddigan, recorded at Bristol, Connecticut in 1916, his mother's name was given as Catherine Walsh, and it says she was born at Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. This death certificate raised several questions about the true identity of Richard's mother. The 1800 List of Inhabitants at Ferryland shows a Catherine Evoy was born there about 1798. She was the youngest child of Michael and Elinor Evoy. Michael Evoy died in the latter half of that year. His widow, Eleanor, is shown as being married again in the List of Inhabitants of 1800, this time to James Walsh.
The main question as to whether Catherine Walsh, mentioned in Richard's death certificate, was the Catherine Evoy born in 1798, may have finally been answered in a recent ancestry.com contact from California. Apparently, Richard had a sister, Mary Ann Reddigan, (previously unknown) who married James Jollymore in Nova Scotia, and in their 1861 marriage record, her parents were identified as Richard Reddigan and Catherine Evory (sic). The Jollymore family immigrated to California in about 1884.
It is not known when Catherine died, but it appears that it was sometime between 1857 and 1872. The only early reference that has been found for the name Catherine Reddigan is one in which she is listed as the godmother of Robert Luke Condon, who was baptized at Fermeuse on October 16, 1857. Although the wife of Micheal Reddigan(son of Richard) was also named Catherine, it appears they didn't marry until the 1860s. Richard Reddigan Sr. makes no reference to a wife in his will of 1872, so it is fair to conclude that she had predeceased him.
Catherine married Richard Reddigan Abt 1827, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Richard (son of Ancestral Reddigan) was born Abt 1800, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland; died Abt 5 Apr 1872, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 7 Apr 1872, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. [Group Sheet]

James Walsh Sr. married Nelly (Ellen/Elenor) Evoy, the widow of Michael Evoy at Ferryland in 1799. They ran a pub and lived at Ferryland for a period of time before moving to Caplin Bay, sometime after 1805. James Jr. was in all likelihood born at Ferryland, however he may have been born at Caplin Bay. He is listed at Caplin Bay in Lovell's 1871 Directory, and it appears that he was still alive when his daughter Catherine Gregory died at Little Bay Mines in 1884. His death is not found in the Vital Statistics Deaths, which started about 1892.

In a petition, dated 12 July 1864, Catherine Evoy requested Letters of Administration for the Caplin Bay property of her deceased husband, Patrick Evoy, "who died about three years ago without making a will, leaving property to the probable value of sixty pounds".
Catherine stated that she had two children, John and Ellen and that both were married by this time. She also stated that her son John Evoy and family were living in her dwelling.
Died:
A Catherine Evoy of Caplin Bay died on 26 Feb 1886. Deceased was the widow of the late John Evoy. Her recorded age appears to be 52, however, some researchers believe the faded newspaper entry says "62 years"??

| 10. | Ellen Evoy (2.Patrick2, 1.Elenor1) was born Bef 1840, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died Aft 1869, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Yes, date unknown. Notes:
Catherine Evoy's Letters of Administration petition identifies Ellen as the daughter of Patrick Evoy. Although there are some suggestions that Ellen may have had several brothers, it appears that John Evoy was her only brother. In 1864, the Evoy property at Caplin Bay was still in the possession of Patrick's wife, Catherine, but it appears it was later passed on to Ellen (Evoy) and her husband, Robert Swain Jr.
Robert and Ellen Swain's only son, John, moved away and died in 1894. Their daughters, Mary (Polly Ledwell), Elizabeth (Liz Miskill) and Catherine (Kate Walsh) eventually inherited this property. Elizabeth and Catherine married and lived in St. John's and sold their share of the property to the Sullivans. The share, belonging to Mary, who married Sebastian Ledwell from Little Placentia, remained within the Ledwell family.
Ellen married Robert Swain Abt 1857. Robert (son of Robert Swain and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryan) was born Abt 1830, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 9 Jan 1909, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 11 Jan 1909, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Census:
In the 1871 Canada Census, there is a listing for a William Saunders (age 42) who was born in Newfoundland. He is recorded as being a Roman Catholic, living in a Hospital for the Insane. His occupation was recorded as a stevedore.
Census:
In the 1881 Canada Census, William Saunders, 67, a stevedore, was living in an Insane Asylum. He was a Roman Catholic, born in Newfoundland.
Special Note:
The name William Saunders appears as a witness at the marriages of three daughters of James and Joanna (Evoy) Saunders at St. Mary's Basilica in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1840s and 1850s. These events suggest a close kinship, and although I found no documented proof that William was their brother, I believe it is a strong possibility.
Buried:
William is commemorated on the same headstone as James and Johanna Saunders and one of their granddaughters.

Ferryland Court Records
15 1837 John Sanders Junr. Charged with obstructing the constables in execution of their duties.
22 Nov. 1838, Grand Jury List - John Sanders member. It was recorded that the Magistrates/J.P. present were: Robert Carter, Peter Winser, Alan Goodridge, and J.W. Sanders, Esq.
Court Action:
In today's world the term 'Junior' is usually applied when referring to a son with the same forename as his father. However, in earlier times it was also used to distinguish between any two males, with the same names, to identify the subject person by virtue of his relative age. Based on a search of various Ferryland Court records, a younger John Sanders was first recorded about 1837. He was referred to as John Sanders, Junr. in two records and later in 1838 just as John Sanders in another record.
Court of Sessions - Southern Circuit Minutes
15 February 1837 - Sanders, John Junr.(and others) charged with obstructing the constables in the execution of their duties.
27 February 1838 - Penny, Edward vs. Sanders, John Junr. Penny claimed John had threatened him. This incident was likely in relation to Penny assaulting a Thomas Sanders on the previous day, February 26. Also on February 27, and likely because of the same incident, Penny charged Richard Sanders with assaulting him.
22 November 1838 - John Sanders - Member of the Grand Jury. The Magistrates/JPs at this session were Robert Carter, Peter Winser, Alan Goodridge and J.W. Sanders Esq. The latter was likely John Sanders' uncle.
Voter:
In 1840 and 1841, the Voter Lists for the settlement of Ferryland, recorded John Sanders's 'place of abode' as the North Side. In 1842, it lists a John Saunders at Cold East [Point], and likewise, a John Sanders is listed at the same 'place of abode' in 1844. A later update notation, written in the 1844 Voters List, states 'died 1845'. The validity of this update note is questionable since there is no other reference to indicate that it is factual.
To add to the confusion, the baptism records at St. John's show a son, James, was baptised there to John and Catherine in May 1842. While this baptism suggests James was born at St. John's and his family had moved there, this may not have been the case. The Voters Lists raise the possibility that John and Catherine may have lived at Ferryland until 1844. The next three children for this couple were baptised at St. John's between February 1845 and September 1847 before they moved on to Nova Scotia.
John married Catherine Madden 1840, Holy Apostles Parish, (Fermeuse/Renews), Newfoundland. Catherine was born Abt 1821, Renews, Newfoundland; died Aft 1865; was buried Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

Burial:
Headstone - Ferryland RC Cemetery - near Johnston family plot. Richard & Jane Reddigan, 95 yrs and 90 yrs.
The ages on this commemorative marker were estimated by a niece of Jane Reddigan. However, Richard's age on his death certificate was given as 82 years, 8 months, and 11 days, but, of course, this age was based on the date of birth given by his wife Jane. Dates/ages given in other documents indicate earlier and later birth dates for Richard.

No headstone was found for Richard Reddigan in St. Thomas' Cemetery in Bristol, CT.
Although Richard was buried in Bristol, Connecticut, a homemade headstone was eventually erected in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Newfoundland for both him and Jane. | 25. | James Walsh (8.James2, 1.Elenor1) was born , Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died Aft 1870. Notes:
In January 1870, Crown Land grant #3068 implies that there were two James Walshs at Caplin Bay. The grant was made to James Walsh Jr., but it mentions that the land he was granted was bounded, on the south western side, by property owned by James Walsh Sr. Strangely, it does not mention a road way between these two pieces of property. The survey sketch appears to show the land north of what is now the public road. This section of the public road is still referred to locally as Walshes Lane.
No other reference has been found to James Walsh Jr. All of the property, both side of the road, was eventually inherited by descendants of Robert Walsh and Mary (Walsh) Murphy, James' brother and sister respectively.

| 31. | Thomas Evoy (9.John3, 2.Patrick2, 1.Elenor1) was born Yes, date unknown, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown; was buried Yes, date unknown. Notes:
Thomas Evoy was the godfather at the 1872 baptism of James Kelly, son of Martin Kelly and Anastasia Kane. I suspect that Thomas married Martin Kelly's sister, Catherine, in 1874.
Thomas Evoy appears to be the last male bearing that surname recorded in the Ferryland area. I have speculated that he was likely the son of John Evoy, and grandson of Patrick and Catherine Evoy of Caplin Bay. No later records have been found to prove or disprove this possibility. All references to the Evoy surname disappeared from Ferryland District church records after the baptism of Thomas' daughter in 1878.
Thomas married Catherine "Kate" Kelly 2 Nov 1874, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Catherine (daughter of James Kelly and Catherine Delahunty) was born Yes, date unknown, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown; was buried Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

There appears to be two entries in the Holy Apostles baptisms for this individual - Dec 30 1859 and July ?? 1860. The godfather is listed the same, but one says the godmother was Sarah Kehoe and the other entry says Catherine Kehoe.
Residence:
Swain, John - fisherman - Little Bay Harbour.
Died:
It appears that John left Caplin Bay in the 1880s and went to work in the copper mines at Little Bay, on the western shores of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Little Bay, once called Indian Bight, is a community 16 kms north of Springdale, Newfoundland. When the copper reserves started to deplete in the early 1890s, many of the miners who had settled there, also worked at their previous livelihood - fishing. This appears to have been John's situation. However, John was killed in a mining accident in 1894. His occupation at the time of his death was listed as a smelter. His widow, Mary, is listed as still living in Indian Bight (Little Bay) in 1898.

No baptism record could be found at Ferryland or Renews for Elizabeth. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, her birth month and year was recorded as Jun 1877. However in the 1935 Newfoundland Census, her age was given as 66. That age indicates that she was born abt. 1869. Her Vital Statistics death record says she was 71 when she died in 1943 (b. abt. 1872). Given that no baptism record was found at Holy Trinity RC Parish, it appears 1869 may be her most credible year of birth.

Birth:
In this marriage record, the groom's parent were identified as Thomas and Eleanor Crockett. It doesn't give Eleanor's maiden name but noted that Thomas Sr. was a seaman. It also noted Thomas Jr. (age 27) was a clerk and that Margaret was 24 years old.
Died:
The information on Thomas' death certificate was given by his daughter, Eleanor Beatrice Crockett. She gave her grandfather's name correctly as Thomas Crockett, born in Scotland. However, she misspoke her grandmother's name as Elena Lawrence, who was born in Halifax. I not sure of the reason for the confusion but Thomas's mother was Eleanor Saunders. However, her father's aunt, Sarah Saunders, was married to Nicholas Lawrence so it appears Eleanor confused her grandmother's surname with that family.
On the death certificate, it states that her father was an accountant so this information agrees with occupation titles (clerk, bookkeeper) recorded in earlier censuses records and other documents.

The John V. Pugh, who died in New York in 1883, appears to match the John V. Pugh from this family. While the 1881 Canadian Census shows John still living in Halifax, NS, his occupation was given as a clerk. Other than the fact that the listing says he had been in the US for five years, his occupation there matches the line of work noted in the 1881 Canadian Census.

Margaret's home address was given as 10 Linden St. in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was noted as being single. Margaret's personal information was given by a friend, Mrs. Geo. A. Tolson? who appears to have lived at the same address. However, she gave Margaret's mother's maiden name as Alice Affleck when it should have been Saunders. Notes:
Baptism:
I found this baptism record for St. Paul's RC Church for William Lawrence. His father was recorded as Nich and his mother was recorded as Sarah Landers (sic). I think it is likely that this is an error that was meant to be Sanders, the alternate spelling often used for Saunders.

Birth:
The 1921 Newfoundland Census clearly indicates that Catherine was born at Caplin Bay, Newfoundland.
Died:
The Vital Statistic record says this individual was born at Torbay. This is an error since the 1921 Census for Torbay correctly states that Catherine was born at Caplin Bay.

Evening Telegram (St. John's, N.L.), 1903-11-27.
------------------------------------------------
ATTACKED BY A LYNX. Last week James Power, of Caplin Bay, was attacked by a lynx while out shooting, and but for the timely arrival of John Reddigan and J. Ryan he would have been torn to pieces. It is a remarkable fact that lynx run away from people in Newfoundland except those living on the Peninsula of Avalon.
Evening Telegram (St. John's, N.L.), 1919-10-30.
------------------------------------------------
NEARLY DROWNED. During the gale, yesterday morning, Mr. Sebastian Laidwell (sic - Ledwell) was blown by the violence of the wind, into Old Woman's Pond near Caplin Bay and would have had a hard time getting out only for the timely assistance of Mr. John Reddigan who was passing.
Research Overview:
John was a fisherman/farmer all of his life, the traditional occupation for most men of Calvert of that era. He lived in the old house on the land that had been settled by his grandfather in the 1820s. In his grandfather's will of 1872, John is mentioned as one of the eldest sons of his father, Michael, and was slated as an eventual heir of a half share of the old Reddigan homestead along with his brother, Richard.
This Richard, according to family lore was lost at sea, and John's other brothers also died, except for his younger brother, (Big) Mike. Mike was only a few weeks old when his grandfather died, and was not willed any property. However, in the second decade of the 1900s, so the family story goes, John agreed to split the house and land that he had inherited into two equal parts and he gave half of it to his brother, Mike, to "keep peace in the family".
Thereafter the old duplex house was occupied for many years by both families; with John's half being occupied by his son, Tom, until his death in 1984. The old house remained standing, but in an ever declining state of disrepair, until it was eventually demolished in 2005.
Died:
There was no Newfoundland Vital Statistics death record found for John Reddigan, however the attached obituary was found in a Boston newspaper.

| 75. | Joseph "Jose" Reddigan (19.Michael3, 7.Catherine2, 1.Elenor1) was born Abt 1870, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 2 Apr 1906, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 4 Apr 1906, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
Died:
A story told by Tom Reddigan relates that his Uncle Jose died after a voyage to the icefields (i.e. seal hunting). Apparently he had mistakenly taken a clothes bag belonging to someone else and didn't discover this until he was at the icefields. The clothes that were in the bag didn't fit him properly and he caught a severe cold. His death certificate states he died from pulmonary tuberculosis, however it is possible that it may have been that pneumonia or the severe cold hastened his inevitable death from tuberculosis.

| 76. | Michael "Big Mike" Reddigan (19.Michael3, 7.Catherine2, 1.Elenor1) was born Abt Mar 1871, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 1962, Calvert, Newfoundland; was buried 1962, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:
- Research Overview: Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
- Baptism: 7 Mar 1871, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland
Notes:
Research Overview:
Mike Reddigan was the last of Michaeal and Catherine (Whelan) Reddigan's children to die. He was a big tall man and even at 91 years old, he was only slightly bent by age. It seems that in his younger days, Big Mike, as he was called to distinguish him from his cousin Mike Joe Reddigan, was well known for his pugilistic inclinations and there are a number of stories told at Calvert of his prowess.
In the early 1900s, Mike Shallow of Admiral's Cove, Fermeuse, who had moved with his family to Boston and trained as a boxer, came back to Newfoundland. He eventually became the British Heavyweight Champion. It was said that he spent some time around Calvert (his mother's birthplace) and soon learned to steer clear of Mike Reddigan. This lead someone to quip that Mike Shallow may have been the "official" British Heavyweight Champion but Mike Reddigan was the "unofficial" British Heavyweight Champion.
Another story is told of how a group of young men decided that they would - collectively - take Big Mike down a notch. So they lay in wait one dark night, by the roadside, and pounced on Mike and a companion when they came by. In the ensuing fight, Big Mike and his companion fought hard and, though outnumbered, they eventually put their attackers to flight. Mike's companion mused that since it was too dark to recognize any of their attackers, maybe they should report the incident to the constable at Ferryland and have him investigate. Big Mike's reply to this was "I'll know mine in the morning". The "mine", meaning the ones that he had hit, who undoubtedly would bear the marks of his knuckles for quite a while afterwards.
Michael married Catherine Frances "Kate" McBride 29 Nov 1916, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Catherine (daughter of John McBride and Elizabeth Bridget Ryan) was born 15 Nov 1886, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 1975, Calvert, Newfoundland; was buried 1975, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
Birth:
No baptism record was found for this Alice Anne, however the birth date used here was given on her Aug 1963 application for a US Social Security Number, under the name of Alice Ann Pike. It is interesting that her parent's names were given as John (sic) Redigan and Catherine Whelan. The same error in her father's name was also made on her death certificate??
Immigration:
The manifest of the SS Silvia shows that Miss Alice Reddigan (20) and Miss C. Reddigan (18) were listed as sailing from St. John's on Nov. 14, 1903 via Halifax, NS, arriving at New York, NY on Nov. 17, 1903. The manifest indicates that their final destination was Halifax, however this was likely an error since they appear to have traveled on to New York.

| 84. | Catherine Frances "Kate" Reddigan (23.Bridget3, 7.Catherine2, 1.Elenor1) was born Abt Jul 1877, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 1950, United States. Other Events:
- Baptism: 9 Jul 1877, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland
- Immigration: 14 Nov 1903, New York, New York, United States
Notes:
Immigration:
Immigration records show that Miss Alice Reddigan (20) and Miss C. Reddigan (18) were listed on the manifest of the SS Silva departing from St. John's on Nov. 14, 1903 for Halifax, NS and New York, NY. However on the manifest indicates that their final destination was Halifax, not New York.
Reddigan family folklore related by the late Tom Reddigan indicates that his Aunt Alice and cousin Catherine Frances went to the US at the same time. This information appears to match the 1903 immigration record information. However, in the 1910 US Census, Catherine's immigration year is recorded as 1907. In searching the immigration records for that year, there is also a record for a Kate Reddigan who arrived in New York, via Halifax, on May 15, 1907. However, there is insufficient information to determine whether this individual was Catherine Frances Reddigan of Caplin Bay or Catherine Reddigan of St. John's. At that point in time, some of the St. John's Reardigan family still used the Reddigan spelling of the surname.
Catherine married George Joseph Armstrong 24 Apr 1910, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1900.
WRAPPED IN FLAMES, SHE DASHED INTO THE STREET - Agnes Jollymour Fatally Burned in a Gasoline Explosion.
ALAMEDA, Feb. 26 - Wrapped in flames from head to foot Miss Agnes Jollymour dashed out of the store of P. W. Wobber, 1545 Park Street, this afternoon, creating great excitement on Alameda's main thoroughfare. The flames were quickly extinguished, but the young lady was so badly burned that she cannot recover.
The fire was caused by the explosion of a can of gasoline and Miss Jollymour, who remained conscious throughout her suffering, was able to make a statement as to the manner of the accident to the physicians who attended her. She said she went into the shed in the rear of the Wobber store, where the illuminating oils are kept, for the purpose of filling a can with gasoline. The shed was dimly lighted by a small coal oil lamp, but Miss Jollymour did not notice its proximity to the gasoline. She had just begun to pour the gasoline when it exploded. In an instant she was enveloped in flames and ran screaming into the street.
George Foster of Foster &Son, contractors, was working upon a building in course of erection adjoining the Wobber store. Miss Jollymour ran to him, putting her hands upon his shoulders. Foster told the girl to lie down in order that he and others who came to his assistance might have a better chance to stamp out the fire. She refused to obey and was finally thrown to the ground. The flames were not easily subdued, but finally Foster procured a bucket, filled it with water from a barrel used by plasterers, and threw it upon the suffering girl.
Miss M. M. Smith, whose father is engaged in the tea business next to the Wobber store, saw Miss Jollymour run into the street and held her in her arms while the flames were being quenched. Her own clothing was slightly scorched.
Miss Jollymour was removed to the home of her mother, 1130 Park Avenue, where all that could be done was performed by kind hands. The physicians in attendance think there is small hope for her recovery. Over one-half of her body is horribly burned, particularly about the abdomen. In her efforts to beat the flames away her hands were also burned.
"When Miss Jollymour came running out of the store," said Miss Smith," she was a mass of fire from the ground to her chest. I ran to her assistance and after she had been forced to the walk, held her in my arms. I screamed to the men not to use any water, but they found they could not get the flames out with their hands and so dashed it upon her." "There was nothing else to do but use the water," said George Foster. "We tried to stamp the fire out, but it seemed to be getting worse. I know that water is not considered a good thing to use, but I had rather use some of it than see the whole body scorched with burns."
Once before in her life Miss Jollymour had been a victim of fire. When she was 10 years old her clothing caught fire from a grate and she came near being burned to death.
THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 1900 - Miss Jollymour Succumbs.
ALAMEDA Feb. 28. Miss Agnes Jollymour, the young lady who was so horribly burned by an explosion of gasoline on Monday afternoon, died at 9 o'clock this evening, after suffering nearly two days from her burns.
