Birth:
In the death certificate of his son Thomas, who died at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1920, it is recorded that his father, John Boland, was born in Newfoundland. However, the information in the death certificate may be questionable, since some other details appear to be incorrect, therefore it is quite possible that John was actually born in Ireland.

Research Overview:
John was the ancestor of one of two Boland families who settled in Caplin Bay. It appears that he was the father of at least seven children who were born there between 1828 and 1850. Research indicates that another John Boland had been living at Ferryland on property near Scoggin's Farm (aka "The Priest's Farm") since at least 1819. The later marriage of a John Boland to Margaret (Peggy) Brennan in 1835, plus some earlier mentions of a John "Bolin/Bolan" in the jury records etc., raises the likelihood that there may have actually been a John Boland Sr. and John Boland Jr. at Ferryland. The continuance of the name at Ferryland in the 1840 - 1859 Voters Lists, and his presence at Ferryland in Lovell's 1871 Directory reinforces that possibility. However, it is not evident from the surviving records if the Boland family at Ferryland was related to either of the two Caplin Bay Boland families. If the Ferryland family had a John Jr., it obviously rules out the possibility that John Boland of Caplin Bay could be a son of the elder John Boland of Ferryland.

The only indication that we have of the origin of the Caplin Bay John Boland is in the death certificate of his son, Thomas, who died in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1920. The informant said that both of Thomas' parents had been born in Newfoundland. If this information is factual, then it raises the question as to where John was actually born. It appears that John Boland of Caplin Bay married abt. 1827. His name appears on the Caplin Bay Voter's Lists from 1840 - 1859, and his later listing as a recipient of a Crown Land Grant indicates he was still living in 1871. No record has been found to indicate when he died.

The locale where John lived was recorded as High Road, Wrens Nest, Harbour, or Riverhead, depending on who compiled the Voter's List.

Died:
Although John Boland was not listed in McAlpine's 1870/71 Newfoundland Directory or in Lovell's 1871 Directory of Newfoundland, Crown Lands grant #3277 records that a piece of land at Caplin Bay was registered in the name of John Boland Sr. in July 1871.

Her birth date was given in the 1921 Newfoundland Census, however the accuracy of that date may be in question since her brother Thomas was supposedly born in October of the same year.

In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, Anne, a widow, was shown living with her stepson, Thomas Whelan in one part of a dwelling. The other part of the dwelling was occupied by her other stepson, Matthew Whelan, and his family.

In the 1935 Newfoundland Census, Anne is shown as living alone in a separate dwelling. (Her stepson, Thomas, had died in 1930).

Buried:
Although there is a headstone for her husband Matthew Whelan, his first wife, and his son in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, no headstone was found for Anne.

There was no Vital Statistics death record found for Anne.

Birth:
Although no parish birth or baptism records survive for that era, Thomas' birth date (22 Oct 1847) was recorded as such in his Nova Scotia death certificate. It also states that Thomas was born in Newfoundland, however no specific location was given.

Residence:
It appears that after Thomas and Ann married, they first lived at Caplin Bay, but later moved to Ferryland. Based on the baptism records, they were still living there up until at least April 1885. After that time there is no mention of Thomas at Ferryland again, nor in any other Newfoundland settlement, until 1898.

Residence:
In that year, Thomas and three of his sons, Charles, John and Stephen (labourers) are listed at St. John's in McAlpine's Newfoundland Directory. They were all living together in the same household in the area known as Ropewalk Range.

Immigration:
Based on Canadian census records, Thomas moved again about 1904 and settled in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He was accompanied by at least two of his sons and daughter, Mary Cecilia, her husband Thomas O'Connell and their three children. Since Newfoundland did not become a province of Canada until 1949, people moving from Newfoundland to Canada prior to that time were considered immigrants, hence their year of arrival was recorded in various Canadian censuses.

Died:
Several details about Thomas were recorded in his Nova Scotia Death Certificate. It is hard to know if this information is factual, since the person filling out the certificate doesn't seem to have given much diligence to getting the correct answers as requested on the various lines of the certificate. Thomas' last occupation was given as a miner and his main cause of death was pneumonia, although it appears that he may have been ill for a while, since a contributory factor to his death was general debility.

The certificate verifies that this individual was the son of John Boland and Mary "Boland", whom it states were both born in Newfoundland. The fact that Mary "Boland" was entered where the certificate requested the mother's maiden name appears to be an error.

Thomas' death certificate states the informant giving the details was "Dan" Boland. Unfortunately many of the entries in the certificate form are filled out incorrectly, so I have reason to believe that the name written as Dan Boland was meant to be Ann Boland, Thomas' wife.

The manifest also states that Stephen was going to join his wife, Fanny, who was living at 171 West End Avenue. Stephen is described as a miner, 32 years old, in good health, 5' 7'' tall with a dark complexion, black hair and gray eyes. The manifest also states that he was born in St. John's, Newfoundland. Although this wasn't factual, it seems it was common practice for people to give a larger town or city as their place of birth.

There is an interesting story about Jack and Mary O’Neil Rossiter’s son Tom and their son-in-law Tom Young. Tom Young was shot and killed at the USA border while rum running during Prohibition in the 1930s and Tom Rossiter was charged with defrauding the US Government of $24 Million in unpaid taxes. He smuggled liquor in from St. Pierre and from Barbadoes. He was acquited and finally settled in Halifax where he bought stores for his children. Apparently he made one return trip to Calvert and treated all of his old friends to a night on the town and a night at the Hotel Newfoundland.

YOUTHFUL SKIPPER SUFFERED FROST BITE

By the Trepassey train yesterday afternoon Austen CAREW, captain of the schooner Letty B., which was abandoned off Cape Pine Saturday morning last, arrived in town to enter the General Hospital for treatment for two frostbitten feet. He wasccompanied to town by Mr. P.J. CASHIN, representative of district of Ferryland, to which district CAREW belongs, and was met at the railways station here by Mr. P.F. MOORE the other district representative. A little later in the afternoon the Daily News obtained the following information from Mr. CAREW at the hospital Tuesday morning, January 27th, at 11:30 a.m. Austen CAREW, age 23 years, Stephen YARD, age
22, and James CAREW, age 20 left St. John’s in the schooner Letty B. for Cape Broyle. The wind
came up from the southeast and at 8:30 o’clock that night the schooner was off Petty Harbor
Motion. The wind was so high that they had to run up shore and about 3 ½ miles off the land.

The wind veered to the south south east and the weather became very thick. By 11 o’clock that night the jib was carried away, bowsprit broken and mainsail split. Wednesday the schooner lay to with the wind from the south and position probably off Cape Ballard. Thursday was spend looking for land. A squall came up from the northeast and during a lull Cape Race was sighted. Friday the schooner ran in for land again and just before a shut down of thick snow Cape Race was again sighted. She lay to under double reefed foresail with the wind blowing hard. Saturday morning at daylight the crew as usual tried the pumps, but the schooner was not making any water. Fifteen minutes after water could be heard in the hold swishing backwards and forwards. The pumps were kept going for two hours, but they could not gain on the inflow of water. It was then seen that the schooner was starting to fill. The dory was made ready and before the schooner was abandoned the water was over the top bunks. This was eight o’clock Saturday morning. The crew of three rowed from 8 o’clock to 1 o’clock before Cape Pine was sighted, their course being north west by north. When the dory arrived; in Trepassey at 8 p.m. after 12 hours rowing, it was half full of water. Captain Austen CAREE during that twelve hours got both his big toes frostbitten. Yesterday afternoon he was free of the severe pain. The schooner was owned by Mrs. Ernest CAREW, of Cape Broyle, and it could not be leaned if any insurance was carried.
