| 1. | Edward Keefe was born Abt 1799, Waterford, Ireland; died Abt 20 Oct 1879, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. Other Events:

- Property: 1838, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; Crown Land grant (#240) was for shoreline property on the south side of Caplin Bay.
- Voter: 1840 to 1859, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
- Property: 1870, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; Crown Land grant (#3042) was for property on the south side of the bay and south of the road to Trepassey.
- Residence: 1871, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
It is not clear if Edward's place of birth, just given as Waterford, refers to the county or Waterford City itself.
Research Overview:
The earliest mention of Edward (O')Keefe at Caplin Bay was in a Crown Land grant document dated 1838. In this grant, Edward was noted as being a fisherman from Ferryland. In that same era, there was another (O')Keefe family at Ferryland, whose ancestor was from Co. Tipperary, however, there is no indication that there was any kinship with Edward. After 1838, all records show that Edward lived out the rest of his life at Caplin Bay.
Voter:
Edward is listed there in the surviving Voter's Lists for 1840, 1841, 1842, 1844, 1845, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1852, 1855, and 1859.
Property:
This grant was supposedly burned in the Great St. John's Fire of 1892.
Residence:
Edward Keefe, a planter and male head of the household, is listed in Lovell's Directory for that year.
Died:
The 1879 death record below appears to be for this Edward, likely indicating his district, Ferryland, instead of his actual home settlement of Caplin Bay. The directive "Boston papers copy" implies that Edward had kin in, or near, that American city. As we now know, Edward had both a son, Michael, and a daughter, Anastasia, living in the Boston area.

Generation: 2
| 2. | Michael Joseph Keefe (1.Edward1) was born 21 Sep 1838, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 22 Jul 1923, Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events:
- Naturalization: 29 Oct 1867, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States
- Travel: 1912, Newfoundland; to visit his sister, Margaret (Keefe) Hagan who was living at Fermeuse
- Census: 1920, Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, United States
Notes:
Birth:
The birth date used here was taken from an 1867 naturalization record for Michael "Keef". Since there are no records for this era surviving from his Newfoundland parish, this information cannot be validated. While Michael's birth year tends to vary in some US documents, for the most part, it stays within a few years of the date given in his naturalization document.
Naturalization:
The Michael "Keef" in this record was identified as being from Newfoundland, where he born on 21 Sept 1838. He stated he was living at Gloucester, Massachusetts at the time of his naturalization.
According to the 1900 US Census, Michael entered the US in 1857 and had been living there for 43 years. He indicated in that census that he was a naturalized US citizen. He also gave the same immigration year (1857) in the 1910 US Census. However in the 1920 US Census, when Michael was asked for his immigration year, he indicated 1867. I am speculating that he may have given his naturalization year (1867), instead of his immigration year.
I can't be 100% sure that Michael Keefe of Caplin Bay is same Michael "Keef" who was naturalized in 1867. The 1867 naturalization record that I found states that Michael Keefe was born Sept 21, 1838 in Newfoundland. This was the only record which closely matched the age and origin criteria of the search.
Travel:
His sister's married surname was reported incorrectly in the newspaper article below.
Daily News - St. John's - Sep 9 1912 Mr M O’Keefe, a former resident of Caplin Bay who has been residing in Mass. Census:
US Census information for Michael Keefe based on ancestry.com transcriptions.
This is an extract of information taken from the various US Censuses. Be aware that census information is often fraught with incorrect information due to a lack of knowledge of specific family details, a misunderstanding of questions asked and/or answers given. Enumerators were left to "create" their own spellings, and often had to calculate dates based on age at last birthday, etc. For these reasons, the recorded information often differs significantly from dates recorded in church registers or civil records. Remember too that these records have been transcribed, sometimes introducing additional errors due to difficulty in deciphering some of the handwriting, which varies greatly in quality and style.

| 4. | Anastasia "Anna" Keefe (1.Edward1) was born 31 Oct 1844, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 20 Apr 1904, Brighton, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried Abt 23 Apr 1904, Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events:
- Immigration: Abt 1863, Unknown
- Census: 1900, Brighton, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States
Notes:
Birth:
This birth date was calculated based on Anastasia's official death certificate. It states that she was 59 years, 5 months and 20 days old when she died. Her headstone indicates that she was born in 1845, the year derived if you subtract 59 years from her death year, ignoring the months and days. Other sources suggest she could have been born as early as 1841. In the 1900 US Census, her birth was recorded as Oct 1845.
Although a number of references indicate she was born at St. John's or Ferryland, her family was documented as being at Caplin Bay (renamed Calvert in 1922) when Anastasia was born. Her father, Edward Keefe, was listed in the surviving 1840 to 1859 Caplin Bay Voters Lists.
Immigration:
In the 1900 US Census, Anastasia stated that she had immigrated in 1859. However, based on her December 1862 marriage in Halifax, Nova Scotia, it is unlikely she had already immigrated to the US. We don't know how long Anna and James stayed in Nova Scotia after their marriage.
Upon her death in April 1904, a local newspaper THE ITEM stated that "The late Mrs. Kelly was fifty-nine years of age and for forty-two years she had been a resident of this district." If accurate, this statement suggests that Anastasia and her husband, James, had settled in the US in late 1862 or early 1863.
Census:
1900 US Census: Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Boston Ward 25, Suffolk, Massachusetts; Roll: T623 688; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 1539; enumerated on June 1, 1900. This census shows that by 1900 Anastasia was a widow living at 495 Western Avenue in Boston with her four adult children. She indicated that she had been the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom were still living. Anastasia also indicated that she had been born in (English) Canada. She indicated that her father had been born in Ireland and her mother had been born in (English) Canada. All children indicated they had been born in Massachusetts, however the census stated (incorrectly) that their father had been born in Ireland, not Massachusetts. Anastasia indicated that she had arrived in the US in 1859.

Notes:
Birth:
It is likely that this female was baptised as Mary Joseph. A common practise in the Roman Catholic Church at that time was to use a male saint's name as the second name of a female child. For example, my grandmother was baptised as Bridget Joseph.
Mary's birth record states that both of her parents were born in Newfoundland and that James was employed as a butcher.
Prior to 1874, Brighton was part of Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Buried:
According to Mary's great-grand niece, her initial burial was in an unknown grave in Holyhood Cemetery, but she was re-interred in the Kelly family plot at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, when her father, James, was buried there on July 3, 1896.
Although Mary actually died in 1891, her year of death was incorrectly inscribed on the family headstone as 1896. This was likely an error in the information given to the stone carver.
Died:
Mary's death record states that her father was born in Brighton and her mother was born in Newfoundland.
