Notes:
This cemetery was consecrated about 1870 as a replacement for the Old Non-Denominational Cemetery located at the south side of Ferryland. While this cemetery is generally referred to as Roman Catholic, exception have been made for some individuals from mixed marriages who retained their original religious affiliation. Initially certain sections were segregated by settlement, which were in turn subdivided into family plots. On the basis of these allocations, Caplin Bay/Calvert, and for several years Aquaforte residents, buried their dead primarily at the north-west end of the cemetery, while Ferryland residents buried their dead on the south-east side of the pathway (in the foreground). Within a few years, Aquaforte residents opened their own cemetery so Ferryland RC Cemetery was, and still is, used almost exclusively by residents of Calvert and Ferryland. This cemetery has been expanded several times, and for the most part, burials exclusive to a family plot have become a thing of the past, except where interment space is reserved in older plots, or where inurned cremation ashes are buried atop existing grave-sites.
As can be seen from the photo, there are large areas of this cemetery that no longer have any visible markers/headstones. In earlier times, those who couldn't afford the cost of a headstone, often marked their loved ones' graves with large flat stones or wooden crosses in hopes of someday being able to afford a more aesthetically pleasing and robust monument. While some reached that objective, there are many gravesites that have no marking and therefore can no longer be accurately located. Many temporary markers have disappeared due to decay or neglect, and even some older headstones have crumbled to rubble due to many years of exposure to the harsh Newfoundland climate.
