55 1911 Census - Nova Scotia - Colchester (County) Truro Enum # 28 - Page 19 - Line 48 Household 165 - Maney, Nellie F Boarder S 22

Household 165 was the home of an old retired couple, Mr.(age 80) & Mrs. (age 73) Fletcher. There is no birth date information recorded for Nellie, but her age is given as 22. I got the impression that Nellie probably wasn't present when the census information was enumerated. The blurred original indicates she was employed as a spinner at (Stanfield's) Woolen Factory in Truro, NS. Her place of birth is given as N.S., not Newfoundland. Nellie is shown as being Roman Catholic (The Fletcher's were Presbyterians) and all are recorded as Canadian, of Irish origin.

In the 1911 Canadian census, John and his son Clifford are shown as lodgers with a family named Redpath. Again John's age has changed, with his birth date given as Apr. 1864 and his age as 49, which still doesn't calculate properly. John's occupation is given as carpenter.

59 1920 U.S. Census • Massachusetts • Worcester • Millville • ED# 157- Page 18A

There is a Henry Williams from Newfoundland shown on this page of the 1920 U.S. Census. He is living with his sister Elizabeth and her husband James Powell, and family. The ages of Henry and Elizabeth closely match children of the same name born to Martin Williams and Mary Noonan of Ferryland. James Powell's age matches very closely with a James Joseph Powells, son of William Powells and Teresa Brien, who was born at Ferryland in Mar. 1876. They are living at what appears to be 327 Rochael Avenue in Millville, MA. Henry is listed as a bootmaker at the Rubber Mill and it appears he is a widower. Henry indicated that he entered the U.S. in 1901.

I could not locate his children in the 1920 Census.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT FERRYLAND- JAMES CLOWE DIED FROM INJURIES WHILE ON HIS WAY TO HOSPITAL

An accident that ended fatally, occurred at Ferryland on Saturday afternoon, the victim being James CLOWE, a fisherman of that place. The accident was a peculiar one. Deceased was returning home from the fishing grounds in his motor boat and was leaning over the engine house when the fly wheel of the 7-horse power engine came off and smashing the woodwork, struck CLOWE with terrific force in the abdomen. He was knocked unconscious and on reaching shore was attended to by Dr. FREEBAIRN, while Rev. Father MAHER was also called. On recovering consciousness, it was seen that he was hurt internally, but it was not thought his conditions was so serious. Yesterday his condition became worse, however, and he suffered intense pain and it was deemed advisable to have him sent to the General Hospital. Sir. M. P. CASHIN received a message yesterday at noon telling him of the accident and as it was impossible to take him to the city by motor, asking that a steamer be sent. Sir Michael immediately arranged to send the Cabot and at 3.30 p.m. yesterday the ship left for Ferryland. Captain DALTON lost no time in getting there and at 7.40 last evening the ship left with the injured man on board. He was accompanied by his brother and another relative. All possible for his comfort on board the steamer was done but shortly after passing Cape Broyle he passed away. The Cabot thereupon returned to Ferryland with the body, where there is universal sympathy felt over his untimely end. Deceased, who was 24 years of age is survived by a widow and one child.

77 80 YEARS

Sister Clotilde Jones traveled from her home in Cape Broyle, Newfoundland, Canada, to enter the Clinton Franciscans in 1922 and later to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. After nearly 70 years of ministry in housekeeping and food service, Sister Clotilde became an active volunteer at the Good Shepherd Christian Victory Center in Clinton, assisting with the re-sale shop and ministry to the homeless. Her earlier ministry was at the hospitals then owned and operated by the congregation in Iowa: St. Francis Hospital, Grinnell, and Mercy Hospital, Burlington, now Burlington Medical Center, and at St. Francis Hospital, Macomb, Ill., and later at The Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton. Sister Clotilde has been living at The Alverno since 1996.

This shows James and Anastasia (Anna) were living on Western Avenue in Boston. They had eight living children at this time. James and Anna indicated that all of their parents were born in Ireland. It states that James was born in Massachusetts, and it shows Anna was born in Canada (technically incorrect since Newfoundland did not become part of Canada until 1949).

This census shows that by 1900 Anastasia was a widow living at 495 Western Avenue in Boston with her four adult children. She indicated that she had been the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom were still living. Anastasia also indicated that she had been born in (English) Canada. She indicated that her father had been born in Ireland and her mother had been born in (English) Canada. All children indicated they had been born in Massachusetts, however the census stated (incorrectly) that their father had been born in Ireland, not Massachusetts. Anastasia indicated that she had arrived in the US in 1859.

Elizabeth Gobbett, owner of Piggeon's Plantation near the Pool; bounded by Benger's Plantation on the southeast and Thomas Smith's on the northwest; she was granted a patent in 1750 to replace an earlier lost patent.

Elizabeth Gobbet and Elliass Piggeon record of 1750 plantation occupied by William Saunders (of three boat rooms) near Pool - 1750 to 1763.

September 10, 1763 - Sanders, William - Lost his patent to his plantation called 'Pegger's Room'(sic) in a fire in the premises of : Carter, Robert.

******* The transcription of various documents related to an individual recorded as Elizabeth Gobbett, has caused some confusion. Several researchers have interpreted that in 1750, a plantation at the Pool in Ferryland, was jointly owned by Elizabeth Gobbett and another person named 'Ellias Pidgeon'. However, as far as I can determine, this phrase actually indicates Elizabeth's maiden name, (in the terminology of that era), as 'Alias' Pidgeon. It is likely she was the daughter of William Pidgeon, a mariner from Devon, England. He owned the plantation at Ferryland in partnership with John Spinster and, as with many West Country fishermen, his working life was shared seasonally between Ferryland, Newfoundland and his hometown of Beer, Devon, England. After his wife died in 1720, William Pidgeon purportedly spent most of his time at Ferryland, where he was eventually appointed constable. It appears that he died there in 1733. See this website page: http://www.pid-gen.uk/PIDGEON/Trees/Tree_Seaton.html.

This website indicates that Elizabeth Pidgeon had married Daniel Seaward but she was widowed by 1733. In her father's will, Elizabeth was named as his executrix and was left goods and money at Ferryland. The website, at this point in time, makes no mention of how her surname became Gobbett. This likely involved a second marriage, but by 1750, it appears Mr. Gobbett had died, or they had parted ways. That same year, Elizabeth Gobbett and John Allen were reprimanded by the Justice of the Peace at Ferryland when he discovered that she was living together in a common-law relationship. ******

31 Aug 1750 - Gov. Drake (Ferryland) - petition of Elizabeth Gobbett regarding patent granted for a plantation.

By Sir Francis Drake, Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the Island of Newfoundland and its dependencies.
Whereas Elizabeth Gobbett, (Ellias (sic) Piggeon) of Ferryland Harbour have this day presented me a petition setting forth that she had a patent granted her for a plantation near Ferryland Pool known by the name of Piggeons Plantation, (say three boat rooms), bounded by Mr. Benger's plantation on the S. East and Thomas Smith's on the N. West but by misfortune lost the original patent, Therefore praying me to grant another in consideration of the loss she sustained in want of right to hold said plantation.
I do hereby by virtue of the power and authority to me given Grant the said Elizabeth Gobbett (Ellias (sic) Piggeon) the above mentioned premises and boundaries thereof their heirs, Executors, Administrators, and assigns forever.
Given under my hand and seal at Ferryland, 31th day of August, 1750 - F. W. Drake

The London Chronicle Vol 45, April 12-14, 1757
Extract of a Letter from Mr. Robert Carter, dated at Ferryland in Newfoundland, Jan. 12:

"I have the great Misfortune to acquaint you, that on the 24th of last Month, by some Neglect in heating Mr. Benger's Oven, a terrible Fire broke out about One in the Morning. I was waked out of my Sleep, and ran thro' the Fire in my Shirt with two of my Children, my Wife followed in her Shift, but my Son, the Maid-Servant and an Apprentice-Boy were all consumed in the Flames. The Store-Houses and Dwelling Houses were all entirely destroyed; and all the Goods, Furniture, and Provisions whatever, for not a single Thing was saved. Valuing my Goods at prime Cost, I have lost full £2800 exclusive of the Buildings, for I had in the Store 2400 Quintals of dry Fish, which I purposed to send to Spain in the Spring. Mr. Benger and his Family lost their All; and we were reduced to the greatest Distresses for Want of Provisions and Cloaths till we had a Supply from the neighbouring Harbours."
